Summary : This from the conservative heartland: Libertarian candidate raises the bar Source: Ipolitics (Canadian government news-watcher). URL : http://ift.tt/1hRgXp4 Alternative summary : This wingnut party isn't that crazy. Made up mostly of confused, upper-income opters-out, the libertarian movement hasn't captured any ground to speak of anywhere. Too hybrid, I guess. Where left and right agree there's a black hole. Anyhoo. This item comes out of a proudly weird place, Fort McMurray -- sort of like Kuwait at the gates of the Arctic. There's so much oil and so much money there; however, this oil-sands boomtown is blue-collar and redneck. And that's just the kind of place where labor + capital = something strange. I.e., it's fertile ground for libertarians to campaign for a smidgen more their usual less-than-one-percent. Conservatives rule supreme in this part of northern Alberta (Alberta is like Montana with skyscrapers and Aston Martins, for those of you in the States). File this political move under: opportunist, but with smarts and a finger in the air. Another thing: this is all happening in Alberta, which is (like Mexico under the PRI for so many decades decades) a one-party state, both federally and provincially -- they have never in modern times elected any government (no matter how good or terrible) that is not super conservative. BTW: The guy who had resigned (MP Brian Jean), as mentioned in the story, had quit his job in the federal parliament's governing "Tory" (Conservative Party) wing. An election is expected to be called in Canada, pitting the tired and politically-wounded Machivelli protege Stephen Harper, against boy-wonder Justin Trudeau, who luckily inherited his mother's good looks, but then also her ditzy intellect. He's the son of the late, brilliant ex-PM Pierre Trudeau, I want gay married couples to be able to protect their marijuana plants with guns Byline: Adam Weinstein If you're gay and don't appreciate the government interfering with your pot-smoking and gun-shooting, then Tim Moen might just be the candidate for you. The only catch is this: You have to live in the federal riding of Fort McMurray-Athabasca. It's been less than a month since Conservative MP Brian Jean announced he wouldn't be seeking a fourth-straight victory in the next federal election, and though a byelection date has yet to be set, one filmmaking, firefighting paramedic has already taken to the hustings in the name of liberty. And he's getting some attention, mostly because he started circulating the meme above. This is how the Libertarian Party of Canada candidate explains it on his website: I want people to hear the message that our human right to self-ownership means that we can marry who we want, put what we want into our own bodies and defend ourselves with guns. Often people advocating civil liberties on the left fail to recognize the right to gun ownership and people advocating civil liberties on the right fail to recognize the right to marry who you want or the right to own marijuana. But just in case you still can't quite grasp the central tenets of libertarianism, a self-explanatory section on his website ( "What is Libertarianism?" ) elaborates. Some, such as the astute observers at Gawker , have noticed it's curiously similar to Wikipedia's entry for libertarianism . They've also noted that his love of freedom extends to fashion, his website's profile picture showing off an affinity for unbuttoned collared shirts that - rumour has it - may become more unbuttoned should he win three per cent of the vote. That could be a tall order. The party that formed in Toronto in 1973 has apparently never won more than 0.25 per cent in any riding.
