I had been practicing backflips for several weeks with my friend who was a former gymnast and was teaching me how to do a backflip. I had picked it up in nearly 2 days and had only practiced once a week for the past couple of weeks because I was preparing for finals. Last Wednesday, I took a study break from preparing for the two finals I hadon Thursday and went to practice with my friend. I was landing them well at the beginning and was even over-rotating. This was the first time I had actually landed on my feet with almost no assistance in the flip. The flip I attempted at the end of the video was after about 25 minutes of practicing and was going to be one of the last attempts of the night. There is a video because I we were working on my form and what I could do to make myself consistent. During the "set", or jump, I felt that I had gotten very little air and tried to stop myself. I did not realize, however, that I had already begun to rotate and as I came down, I landed directly on my head and you can hear some of my bones snap. I did not know this at the time and neither did my friend. After I landed I was more in shock than anything and I laid there thinking about how dumb I was. A physicians assistant was in the building and ran over because she saw it happen. She thought that I should be put in a brace immediately, but the adrenaline made me feel fine except for a little pain and I stood up. After her protests, I laid back down and they called an ambulance. The doctors at the hospital after a CAT scan and X-rays notified me that I had fractured four vertebrae including the C2, C4, C6 and T1. The next day I was checked for ligament and neural damage but they luckily found none. I am currently in a brace and my recovery is being monitored while I spend at least the next six weeks in the brace. Licensing@fullscreen.net gonavy beatarmy
