A Jacksonville, Florida, teacher has been suspended without pay for 15 days for allegedly making racially offensive and sexually charged comments to her students. Southside Middle School teacher Kelly Hendrix is charged with calling students derogatory and homophobic names, telling a father his daughter is lesbian and stating she hates white people. According to the Orlando Sentinel , "One female student said that Hendrix asked her if she was gay, the student said the conversation made her uncomfortable but Hendrix kept at it, giving the student details of a time she had a sexual encounter with a female teacher at the school. ... After that conversation was over Hendrix is said to have hugged the student, kissed her on the cheek and told her she loved her. ..." The investigation says that Hendrix told students if they reported her inappropriate behavior they would fail the class or be given referrals, telling them, "I own you, you listen to me ..." School administrators said a student interviewed as part of the investigation said Hendrix called her father and told him she was a lesbian. Police investigated but found the teacher had broken no laws. Hendrix said in an interview that she believes the allegations against her are part of a payback scheme orchestrated by that student. The allegations, listed as "substantiated" on the Duval County investigation report , include: "... exercised poor judgement (sic) when she had inappropriate communication with a student, when she used profanity in class, asked students about their sexuality, and called students 'gay' and/or lesbian." The reported alleges Hendrix would ask students about their sexuality, but Hendrix said she only did so in one case to help a student who was being bullied. "I called the boy outside and I said to the boy, I said, 'What's going on?' And he said, 'Kids are calling me gay,' and I looked at him and said, 'Well are you gay?' And he said, 'No,' and I said, 'Well why does that bother you?' Simply like that," Hendrix explained. Read "Crimes of the Educators: How Utopians are Using Government Schools to Destroy America's Children" The report also alleges Ms. Hendrix "intimidated" students to remain silent about the conversations or their grades would be impacted. The report lists a prior reprimand for a 1998 incident involving "jerking, slapping" a student and calling students "little brats." The report includes the statement, "It should be noted that some of the details ... in the law enforcement supplement report are inconsistent" with what some students gave in a written statement, and that "Law Enforcement closed their investigation without a finding of any criminal wrong doing by Ms. Hendrix." One student wrote on Fox 30 in defense of Hendrix, crediting the teacher with "saving her life." The student related how she was emotionally troubled, and Hendrix took the time to understand what she was going through. " ... (A)bout half way through the year I had to go to Wolfson's Children Mental Health Unit for being suicidal," Katie Blanchard wrote. "When I came back she sat me down and talked to me, I cried and told her everything, after that we became very close. I would come to her classroom every day after school and just talk to her and Mr. David, they both became very important people in my life. "Around February, I wanted to try out for Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, a high school I had been interested in since sixth grade. I was scared and insecure about auditioning for it, she gave me the courage to try, and I am now a freshman at D.A. in visual arts, next year I will be starting photography and can't be more excited and happy in my life. ... Mrs. Hendrix was there for me, she was real with me." Hendrix disputes the claims against her, saying school administrators never interviewed her after launching an investigation in April. "They've never even met with me and told me what I've done wrong," Hendrix said. "I teach 165 kids this year, (and) they pulled me out of the class because of one complaint - one complaint," Hendrix added. "I've been teaching 21 years. I love it. I love it. And now it's over for me." http://ift.tt/1Gkl6ee
