Happened today (December 8 2015) in the City of Itajai, southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. A man was being transported from the Operating Room to a Recovery Area when the elevator suddenly departed upwards with the doors still opened and the stretcher halfway out. Atlas Schindler, the contractor performing maintenance at the elevator said on a statement that a fail-safe protection device failed causing the elevator to move with its doors opened. They said a investigation is being performed to determined the causes of the incident. The stretcher blocked the elevator from additionally moving upwards and saved the man's legs. The patient was quickly removed and sustained minor injuries. Very lucky indeed.
