Reno, NV - Shipping companies are expecting more than a 10% increase in deliveries between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, as more people purchase Christmas presents, online. FedEx, UPS, and the US Postal Service could combine to deliver more than 1.5 billion packages. Many of those packages will be left on the front steps of people's homes, that could attract thieves. "Pretty brazen and that's the exact M.O.," Officer Tim Broadway of the Reno Police Department said. "They drive around. They're looking for unaccompanied packages, something that's an easy grab, middle of the day. They grab it, they go, they're gone." Reno resident, Harold Thomure, was nearly a victim of one of these crimes. He says two thieves likely followed his UPS driver. When a package was left on his porch, the passenger of the car attempted to steal it. "I wasn't expecting it," Thomure said. "I've gotten many, many packages over the 15 years I've lived here and they've always left them on the porch, and nothing ever happened." On December 4, Thomure had a doorbell installed on his house. The wireless doorbell has a video camera included, that syncs up to smart phones, computers, and tablets. Less than a week later, the $200 gadget paid off. Thomure was walking his dog, across the street from his house, when his phone alerted him that someone was at the door. "It had gone off just three minutes, four minutes before for the UPS driver," Thomure said. "Then, I look and I see the guy walking up onto my porch." The thief rang the doorbell and waited to make sure nobody was home. When no one answered the door, he grabbed the package and headed for his car. Before he got to the silver sedan, Thomure yelled from across the street, "Hey, put that back. It's mine. Put that back." The thief put the box down, and the couple drove away. The entire incident was caught on video.
