Philadelphia, PA - The shooting of a city police officer late Thursday involved a gunman allegedly carrying out the act in the name of Islam while pulling the trigger on a stolen service weapon, authorities revealed Friday. Officer Jesse Hartnett, 33, was struck three times in his left arm when the accused shooter - identified as 30-year-old Edward Archer, of Yeadon, Pennsylvania - came out of nowhere, newly-appointed police Commissioner Richard Ross said during a press conference. "He doesn't appear to be a stupid individual, just an extremely violent one," Ross said of the shooter, who provided a full confession following the gunfire at 60th and Spruce streets at around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Hartnett, who was behind the wheel of a marked police cruiser at the time, was on the receiving end of 13 rounds allegedly fired by Archer. After being struck three times, Harnett exited his car to pursue the gunman, firing back and hitting him at least three times. Archer was apprehended by police not far from the scene. At Friday's press conference, still images from surveillance video show the gunman in a long white robe approach the police car while firing the weapon - which Ross said was reported stolen in Oct. 2013 and resulted in reprimands at the time.
