Dramatic CCTV footage has been released of a shopkeeper leaping on an axe-wielding raider before his wife burst the prolific offender's nose with a baseball bat. Ex-juvenile offender Shaun Andrew McKerry, dubbed Boomerang Boy or Homing Pigeon Boy in his youth, picked the wrong target when he burst into Shildon Post Office and Stores, County Durham, at 8pm on March 15. The masked 31-year-old waved an axe as he demanded cash from terrified assistant Andrea Brighty, but he did not see owner Sab Dhillon's rugby tackle which dropped him to the floor, sending shelves and produce tumbling. As the men wrestled, and with McKerry still holding the axe, Mr Dhillon's wife Sam helped, hitting him twice with a baseball bat to make him drop the weapon. Blood can be seen coming from the would-be robber's nose and Mr Dhillon gestured to his wife to drop the bat. Minutes later the police arrived and arrested McKerry. He pleaded guilty at Durham Crown Court, via videolink from prison, to attempted robbery, a court official confirmed. He will be sentenced on April 24. Mrs Dhillon said: "It was really scary. We didn't realise who he was at the time and how bad his previous convictions were." Her husband told the Northern Echo: "He did not hit me but there was a good chance that he could have as he was waving the axe about blindly while he was on the floor. "I am OK and we're trying to get over it and we just want to put this behind us." McKerry, from Coundon near Bishop Auckland, earned the nicknames Boomerang Boy or Homing Pigeon Boy as he always returned home after committing a crime. McKerry started shoplifting at the age of 12 and by 15 he had been arrested 80 times, and had convictions for aggravated vehicle-taking, sending indecent letters, and burglary. McKerry once stole 22 charity boxes while dressed as a woman, and locals dubbed him a one-man crime wave. Police have arrested another man suspected of being an accomplice and released him on bail pending further inquiries.
