A recent survey conducted by the Gezici Research Company has revealed that 78.3 percent of the Turkish people are against a change of the system in Turkey from the current parliamentary system to a presidential system in which the president has more executive powers. The survey, which was conducted between Aug. 22-23 in 36 provinces across Turkey's seven regions, revealed that while 78.3 percent, including 35 percent of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) voters, are against a switch to a presidential system, 21.7 percent of the people support it. A total of 4,860 people took the survey, which was conducted via interviews. Gezici Research Company is among the polling companies that had the most accurate predictions for the past three elections. A switch to a presidential system is one of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's biggest aspirations, as his post is largely ceremonial under the current parliamentary system. In order to ensure that the necessary constitutional amendments can be made for a system change, Erdogan campaigned widely for the AK Party, his former party, in the run up to the general election held on June 7, though he refrained from specifically mentioning the party's name. The move attracted significant criticism from opposition parties, as he is constitutionally required to remain impartial. When asked the reasons for their opposition to a presidential system, 47.8 percent said they believe President Erdogan will become more "authoritarian and dictator-like" under a presidential system while 39.7 percent said such a change would lead to the division of Turkey and 12.5 percent said the unitary structure of the state would be disrupted. Gezici's survey also questioned people about their political party choices if an election were to be held this Sunday. The results are very similar to those of the June 7 general election. The survey revealed that the AK Party's support would be 38.9 percent, the Republican People's Party (CHP) 27.8 percent, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) 16.3 percent and the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) 13.5 percent while the remaining 3.5 percent of the vote would go to small parties that cannot pass the 10 percent electoral threshold. According to the results, the AK Party would again fail to obtain the minimum number of seats required to establish a single-party government, while the HDP would again pass the electoral threshold. Political parties failed to establish a coalition government following the June 7 election, prompting a snap election that will be held on Nov.1. In the survey, the respondents were also asked about their views concerning the failure of the coalition talks and what they believed was the key obstacle that prevented the formation of a coalition. A total of 52.5 percent of the respondents said it was President Erdogan that prevented the establishment of a coalition government while 29.7 percent blamed the opposition parties and 17.8 percent held AK Party leader Ahmet Davutoglu responsible for the failure. When asked whether Erdogan should have given the mandate to establish a government to CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu after Davutoglu's failure, 66.4 percent said Kilicdaroglu should have been given the mandate while 33.6 percent responded negatively. Despite expectations, Erdogan did not give a new mandate to Kilicdaroglu, whose party is the second largest in Parliament, attracting further criticism and once again casting doubt as to his impartiality. In addition, 55.7 percent of the respondents in the survey said they believe Erdogan and Davutoglu have been acting without common sense since July, when a fresh round of violence began in the country with consecutive acts of terrorism. Other questions asked in the survey include a question as to whether the respondents believed they would get a fair trial if they had to go to court. In response, 75.2 percent said "no." In addition, 68.4 percent of the respondents said they are having trouble supporting themselves financially and are experiencing financial difficulties.
