by Mathias Reymond, September 15, 2014 for ACRIMED : (Action Critique des Medias) French "Media Watch," attentive to the fact checking, Acrimed brings together journalists and media staff, researchers and academics, actors of associative and political life. Acrimed is part of the altermondialist movement. Acrimed is founder of the French Media Watchdog (OFM). Since the end of August 2014, the events in Ukraine are every day more and more unpredictable: while the "pro-Russian separatists" - as they are named in the French media - were losing ground, reinforcements , perhaps from Russia, helped to fight off the Ukrainian army. For the French media, the supposed intervention of Vladimir Putin is unacceptable. Russian President would even now declare war on Europe and violate international law. Back on unilateral and biased media coverage. In complex situation simplistic comments : this seems to be the hard law to which submit some fortunetellers. If Acrimed not seek to prescribe what to think of the situation in Ukraine, the least we can ferret out bias falsifiers who tend to flood much of the French press, although some media do not fall in the "caricature" (including Le Figaro) . Lack of perspective on the events (especially Lib'eration and Le Monde) and worse, omissions or rewriting of history : these are the main means of media coverage of the beginning of September 2014. Nothing seems to have changed since November 2013 ... a review of some liberty, among others, taken with the facts. Illegitimate and legitimate government referendums Bernard Guetta on France Inter (French national radio anchor - 25 August 2014) is certain : " Ukraine on the other hand, the overwhelming majority of the population in any case, refuses to return to its past enslavement, defends its independence and would not be able to quickly integrate not NATO but the EU. "This is yet forget some of the recent political developments in that country. Incumbent president, democratically elected in 2010, Viktor Yanukovych - albeit corrupt as his predecessors - remained at the top of opinion polls until his forced departure in February 2014. Indeed surprising that the French media - yet still very fond of this type of investigation - would not have revealed it. In 2012, the party of Yanukovych (Party of Regions) also won the parliamentary elections. And a presidential election was in 2015 ... Eager, the Kiev activists, turned to Europe and supported by the United States and the European Union, did not wish to wait thus setting up a provisional government essentially composed of independent and members of the center-right, right and right-wing , not necessarily representative of the diversity of the protesters in Maidan Square. This government seems legitimate ? Yes, in essence explained advised commentators because Maidan was legitimate. There are not a matter for us to challenge the right of people to rise up against their leaders, but rather to raise the "double standards" particularly evident in the media coverage of various events in Ukraine, which reflects partisan perspective rarely admitted by those who have adopted it. "Lib'eration" (daily newspaper) stresses that "Ukraine is a sovereign country with legitimate and democratic institutions" (1 September) while excited by the "overthrow of the corrupt regime and pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovych in the rebellion of Maidan. "The fact that the east had overwhelmingly voted for him three years ago does not seem to worry the French media. Indeed, Yanukovych had won in 2010, undoubtedly, east and south of Ukraine, with peaks of popularity in the Donetsk (90.4%), Luhansk (88, 8%), or in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (78.3%). His opponent, Yulia Tymoshenko, in the champion of the West, got votes in the west, the center and Kiev which voted 69.7% . Nevertheless: Arte, (Franco-german cultural TV) on 1 September 2014 , one presents, without any hindsight, the events of the Maidan site exclusively as a great democratic movement. Before releasing a veritable propaganda clip (with rhythmic music and jerky images) to the glory of protesters in Maidan Square, Elisabeth Quin announcement : " Back on the Maidan at the time it was euphoria, removal of a autocrat who set fire to the powder and precipitated thousands of Ukrainians on the famous Maidan in February. "In the same report, it states that Yulia Timoshenko would have received a" hero's welcome "in February 2014 on that place ... so she did only 9% of the vote in Kiev during the presidential election three months later. Bernard-Henri L'evy in Le Point (4 September 2014), the reversal of Yanukovych was obviously the result of a " great democratic and European insurrection. " Then, for most commentators, the presidential elections, held in May 2014 by the interim government, installed easily Poroshenko to power was (for sure) while both legal and legitimate. Marc Semo Lib'eration (1 September 2014) points out: " the Kiev authorities legitimately elected. " He even insists, " the new president Poroshenko was elected in May after a recognized indisputable by the international community poll. The vote could take place in 90% of the country, including most of the East. "Francois Sergent, in the same paper speaks of a" sovereign and duly elected "(Sept. 3) government. Yet part of the country could not move to vote because of armed conflicts in the east. Although elected in the first round, Petro Poroshenko did therefore with moderate participation (60%). Legal and legitimate? In the eyes of French journalists, the movement was justified because Maidan turned toward Europe. However, protests and referendums in the Crimea and in the east (who rejected the mobilizations of Kiev, the provisional government and the new president) found little support in our omniscient commentators. Le Monde (31 August 2014), it still distorts reality by accusing "t he regime of President Putin" to "illegally occupied and appropriating the Crimea in the spring ." Francois Sergent, Lib'eration (September 3), " Vladimir Putin is not simply satisfied after the annexion the Crimea after a bogus referendum. " Fortunately, all the commentators do not share this bias. At the time of the referendum, media voices known - and very present - had spoken to express their amazement at room russophobie face, which will not fail to note here as they are not, usually, exemplified by Acrimed. And Jacques Attali had questioned: " Why refuse to residents of Crimea to choose their destiny ? "(L'Express, March 26, 2014). Then, for the former Minister of Education, Luc Ferry, " saying that the Russian army invaded the Crimea is simply grotesque. It should never be gone in Sevastopol to ignore the massive presence, but perfectly legal, as having been a prior agreement for years, the Russian army . "(BBC, March 20, 2014) ... Putin's Russia had some plans on the Crimea ? Maybe. However, it is sobering to note that the majority of French journalists, blinded by their opposition to Putin, have adopted such a unilateral and partisan point of view, even cheating with reality, sometimes through ignorance, often in bad faith. "Punishing Putin" (again and again) This sounds like a mantra: " We must punish Russia. " At Liberation, it is certain, " Russia went to war against Ukraine. " "Proof" of thousands of Russian soldiers fighting in Donetsk and Lugansk, came to the aid of pro-Russian militias in trouble. " Besides, Francois Sergent has its own sources since he already knows that these are" men of Moscow shot down the plane of Malaysian Airlines. Rude accusation that even Le Monde was not allowed to support ... Away from us, Acrimed, to take sides in such a conflict, but still surprised us a fact : the supposed Russian intervention would be illegal but all the events that led to it - with the actual support of the European Union and the United States - would not do ? The " two weights, two measures " (double standard) is really a very present doctrine in the Atlanticist media. Le Monde, for example, endorsed the comments of Laurent Fabius, " the Foreign Minister, had the merit of being clear on Friday night :" When a country sends military forces into another country without the agreement and against the consent of that country, it's called an intervention, and obviously that's unacceptable , "he said. Just like in Libya France or the United States in Iraq ? The least one can say is that Le Monde has not had the merit of such clarity when it came to deal with the Israeli military action against Gaza. Bernard Guetta, on France Inter (25 August 2014), the Russian intervention would be " burying in Europe in addition, two of the greatest principles on which international relations were established since the end of the second World War - the absolute prohibition of territorial annexations and the inviolability of borders. " As if no boundaries had been changed (Yugoslavia, Serbia ...) or as if no territorial annexation (East Timor, the Palestinian territories ...) had been held since 1945, Bernard-Henri L'evy in Le Point (September 4, 2014) does not say anything else : it is " the first real war for decades in Europe; the first attack on a sovereign state against another sovereign state that it intends to dismember and vassals ". We are embarrassed by so much arrogance and ignorance. As if it were enough to mention Europe (without specifying its borders) to honor the "great principles" ... Within days, in Le Monde, the articles to support the Ukrainian government abound : " From Danzig to Donetsk, 1939-2014 " (September 1); "T he West inept facing the Ukrainian crisis " (2 September); " Bring Ukraine into NATO " (Sept. 3); " Folder Mistral "consistency, please ! "(Sept. 3) ... Not to mention the comical article Sylvie Kauffmann called " Mistral loser "(September 1), referring to ships that France has to deliver to Russia. Several radio and television programs have made a real propaganda in the service of a simplistic opposition : legitimacy movement Maidan and illegitimacy of the insurgency in the east. This is the case, for example, the program " 28 minutes " by Elisabeth Quin on Arte. Among the speakers Raphael Glucksmann, founder of the NGO European Center for Democracy in Kiev, appears immediately as an " activist anti-Putin. " Alexandre Goujon, political scientist, explains that " the Ukrainians know that without Russian support, there is no separatists. There is no civil war" . The commentator here seems to forget that the Civil War was already well in Kiev before the Russians will invite themselves in the conflict, and above all he does not mention the fact that most of the civilian deaths are the result of bombings .. of the Ukrainian army. Like many media, Glucksmann complains that Europe does not want to give weapons to Ukraine , which allows the host to bid: " It's put Ukraine in the hands of Russia ! " "Lib'eration" even tells about truncated and unverified talks allegedly Putin dropped to Jos'e Manuel Barroso. On 1 September first : " Putin knows this and he plays, responding by the threat to telephone shy admonitions of the outgoing chairman of the commission Jos'e Manuel Barroso : If I want it, we are in Kiev in a fifteen ". "Then on September 3," Putin threatened Manuel Barroso " to take Kiev in two weeks. " First, these remarks were reported by a third party. Second, they come from a translation. Finally, they are taken out of context. In addition, they were tempered by the Kremlin (as lefigaro.fr recalls). There is only a burnt title, devoid of any ethics, who may want to make its benefits of such a sentence ... Although the situation in Ukraine is complex, some media are quick to oversimplify the facts systematically between "nice" Ukrainian pro-European and "bad" Ukrainian pro-Russian. Other media fall less into caricature preferring to offer their readers and listeners a more distanced perspective (in the case of Le Figaro, Paris Match or some reports in the eastern Ukrainian gleaned from news channels). But the most obtuse are obsessed with each hiccups of Vladimir Putin, their new bogeyman, still and always indignant and glosent on its authoritarianism and its expansionist desire. Authoritarianism? Undoubtedly. Desire to preserve its sphere of influence? Certainly. But, contrary to the predictions of most commentators, Russia has not invaded eastern Ukraine. The least that can be said is that the Israeli and American military expeditions, that they are real, do not receive the same treatment of (de)favor... Mathias Reymond Notes On this subject, read "French Media Ukrainian campaign," Le Monde Diplomatique, August 2014. See for example the Ukrainian survey whose results are translated into a table on the Wikipedia page of the Ukrainian elections in 2014 . See on the portal of the Ukrainian government, the list of ministers who have ruled the country from 27 February to 25 May 2014 No member of the Party of Regions was among them. "Viktor Yanukovych winner of the presidential election in Ukraine," Robert Schuman Foundation , February 7, 2010. Issue " 28 minutes " hosted by Elisabeth Quin. such as Lib'eration and one of his articles: " You have to give weapons to Ukraine ", 1 September 2014.
