Talks between US Vice President Joe Biden and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have failed to resolve diverging approaches to Islamic State militants. The pair met for about 4 hours on Saturday in Istanbul. The US wants its fellow NATO member and ally to support the fight against the militant group. But Turkey says removing the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria is more important. Biden told a news conference he and Erdogan discussed a possible transition of power in Syria away from Assad. He said they also talked about the fight against the extremists. Biden last month angered people in Turkey by criticizing their refusal to take a frontline role. Observers say his visit is an attempt to mend ties. But the pair made no mention of a specific agreement, indicating they likely failed to achieve a breakthrough.
