http://ift.tt/1TRyxOD Post by Newsroom, Mar 02, 2016 The government of Turkey embarrassed itself today in an attempt to intimidate Russia. Instead of succeeding, the Turks had an Epic Fail! Part of southwestern Russia abuts the Black Sea and the Russian Navy has a significant presence in that area as well as a large Naval Base in The Crimea. It is from this area that the Russian Navy accesses the Aegean Sea, then the Mediterranean Sea. In order to travel to or from the Black Sea, vessels must go through a natural sea lane known as the Bosporus and, the Dardanelles. As seen on the map below, the Bosporus goes directly through the middle of the Turkish city Istanbul. Because the Bosporus and Dardanelles are a crucial sea lane for commerce into and out of the Black Sea, for all the countries that border that body of water, a Treaty was negotiated decades ago, to regulate the use of these sea lanes to protect commerce and security. That Treaty is called the Montreaux Convention. The Treaty gives Turkey control of the Straits and requires Turkey to keep those waterways open to commercial and military vessels from countries bordering the Black Sea. The only way Turkey can legally stop ships, is if it is at war with one of the states around the Black Sea. To date, there is no war. Another aspect of the Treaty gives Turkey the right to "escort" military vessels through the Straits; a right that, until, Turkey has NEVER ONCE exercised. The photos below show that earlier today, as the massive Russian naval ship Novocherkassk 142 transited the Bosporus, Turkey sent its Coast Guard and the Istanbul Marine Police to surround the vessel! The effort failed to achieve whatever the desired result. Look how cute the Turkey Coast Guard is compared to the Russian Navy:
