The Yak-38 Forger was Russia's attempt to build a Navy jump jet. What they ended up with was a plane with that could barely lift its own weight. It also used multiple dedicated lift engines to enable it to takeoff/land/hover. Any failure of one of these meant the plane couldn't return to the Russian aircraft carrier. Even worse, failure was most likely to occur during vertical flight and lead to loss of the aircraft. The crazy thing is they pushed this into operational use. FAIL!
