Despite the fact that Russia and Canada are competing today in the matter of section arctic spaces, they adhere to some general principles that enable them to cooperate even in this subject area. The legal basis for Russian-Canadian relations are political Treaty on consent and cooperation of 19 June 1992 and a number of other political and economic agreements. There are documents that specifically address Arctic issues. So, December 18, 2000 signed a joint Russian-Canadian statement on cooperation in the Arctic and the North, which outlined the main directions of bilateral cooperation in the region.
