Arrests made in Saturday plot for mass killing in Halifax, target was reportedly a shopping mall The RCMP in Nova Scotia say they have stopped a threat that would have resulted in a mass killing at a public venue in Halifax on Saturday.Halifax RCMP Commanding Officer Brian Brennan, who is the assistant commissioner and the senior Mountie in the province, said in a statement to media Friday evening that a 19-year-old man from Timberlea and a 23-year-old woman from Geneva, Illinois, both had access to firearms and were planning to go into a public venue Saturday "with a goal of opening fire to kill citizens and then themselves." Police say they became aware of a weapons-related threat Thursday morning and the incident came to head early Friday at a home on Tiger Maple Drive in Timberlea.Officers with the Emergency Response team entered the home and found the 19-year-old dead inside Friday around 1:20 a.m. Police say he was the only person in the home. Police say evidence of this threat also points to two other males - a 20-year-old from Halifax and a 17-year-old from Cole Harbour, who along with the 23-year-old woman, were arrested and are now in police custody. They say the 20-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested around 2 a.m. at the Halifax airport, while the 17-year-old boy was arrested around 11 a.m. "We believe we have apprehended all known individuals in this matter and eliminated the threat. We are not seeking any further suspects at this time in relation to this investigation," Brennan said in his statement, adding the incident could've been "extremely tragic." Brennan would not characterize the alleged plot as terrorism, saying the views of the individuals "were not based in religion or culture." "(These) people were of the same destructive mindset," he said, although he would not elaborate on the nature of their mindset. Brennan would not say which venue was being targeted, but the Associated Press reported late Friday, citing an unnamed police official, that the target was a shopping mall.Premier Stephen McNeil issued a statement on Friday night thanking the police for their work in stopping this alleged violence. "On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I thank our police officials, here and in the United States, for their quick and professional work," McNeilsaid. "We are grateful for their dedication and vigilance."The mayor of Halifax, Mike Savage, took to Twitter to thank police as well. "Thank you to @HfxRegPolice and @RCMPNS for your exemplary work in protecting Hfx residents. A city is grateful," he wrote. - with files from The Canadian Press http://ift.tt/19ifnwL
