The Striking Similarities Between Bush and Obama

The election of President Obama was in no small part, a referendum on the administration of George W. Bush, and his victory was interpreted as a sound rebuke to eight years of open ended warfare, a vast and growing police state, the destruction of civil liberties, disregard for the Constitution, unchecked executive power, lies and broken promises, hypocrisy and arrogance, a lack of transparency in government, out-of-control federal spending, fever-pitch fearmongering, rampant corruption, and some really stupid gaffes. But what have we gotten instead? More of the same. A LOT more of the same. In fact, every negative aspect of the Bush Administration has come back with a vengeance in the presidency of Barack H. Obama. Everything the American people detested so strongly about Bush has not only characterized the presidency of his successor, it's gotten much worse. Don't believe me? The following is a list of 100 ways President Obama is just like President Bush. We might as well consider it a third Bush term on steroids, or call Mr. Obama "Bush 2.0." If you honestly didn't like Bush, you can't possibly justify liking Obama, not unless you ignore the facts: Bush critics consider his presidency to have inaugurated an era unprecedented in U.S. history for violations of civil liberties, privacy, and the constitutional amendments that protect Americans from unwarranted police actions by the government. The creation of a vast, "national security" state has alarmed critics as something more akin to fascist dictatorship than American republicanism. Yet all of Bush's worst and most tyrannical abuses have not only been continued by the Obama Administration, but taken to a whole new level Throughout his presidency, Obama has blamed Bush and stifled criticism by saying he inherited a mess from his predecessor. The bailout was evil because it rewarded the bad people and punished the good people. No society that does this can expect to remain free or prosperous. Instead of bailing out these corrupt corporations, we should have let them cease to exist, like we did with Enron. Expanded Bush's unconstitutional government faith based programs Obama expanded the federal government's faith based programs which had been started by President George W. Bush. Supported Bush's unconstitutional Patriot Act In May 2011, Obama signed a renewal of the Patriot Act. Increased the national debt more in one term than Bush did in two The national debt increased more during Obama's first three years and two months than it did during all eight years of George W. Bush's presidency. Agrees with Bush's support of unconstitutional, indefinite detention of U.S. citizens without filing any charges In December 2011, ACLU executive director Anthony D. Romero criticized Obama for signing a bill that gave the U.S. government the power to indefinitely detain U.S. citizens without any charges being filed or any trial taking place. Iraq We should have known in 2008 that we wouldn't see any real change from the Obama Administration. Despite campaigning for the U.S. Senate in 2004 on a platform of voting against Bush's war budgets, when he became a Senator, Obama voted for every single one of Bush's requests to continue funding war in the Middle East. Apparently, his streak of broken promises started long before campaigning for the White House (and we'll get to those later down the list). Then right off the bat in February of 2009, a mere month into his administration, President Obama revealed a phony withdrawal plan that would take three months longer than promised, and leave a whopping 50,000 troops in Iraq (out of the 135,000 that were there when Obama assumed office). Eight months later in October 2009, 131,000 troops remained in Iraq, and Obama sent another 1000 at the request of theater commanders in Iraq. Seriously. First Surge in Afghanistan Think Iraq was bad? It gets better!Mr. (Blind) Hope and (Regime) Change kicked off his presidency with a 17,000 troop surge to Afghanistan in February of 2009. 17,000! Don't defend him. Don't say it was necessary to help win the war there. You would not have defended Bush and you know it. Mr. Obama started his presidency by radically escalating Bush's war. Second Surge in Afghanistan But wait- there's more! By December of 2009, less than a year into his presidency, Obama decided to outdo even himself and send another whopping 30,000 troops to Afghanistan! By this point, Al-Qaeda was scattered and devastated. Our troops were overseas fighting someone else's civil war, not defending our freedoms or our safety. Phony Afghan Withdrawal In June of 2011, Obama announced a "troop withdrawal" from Afghanistan, and true to form, it was as phony as his Iraq withdrawal. Even if he stays on schedule and makes the most "radical" withdrawal on the table by the end of 2012-- 30,000 troops-- there would still be more than twice as many troops as there were in January 2009 when Obama took office. Only in the Orwellian world of U.S. foreign policy could something like that be called a withdrawal. The Rise of Drone Warfare The Obama Administration's continued and extensive use of weaponized aerial drones to bomb enemy targets in countries throughout the Middle East (sometimes resulting in the deaths of dozens of civilians at a time when the drone operators or intelligence make a mistake) has touched off a drone arms race with the rest of the world, most notably China. Great. Just great. Bombing Campaign in Yemen Bush bombed in Yemen, but Obama's really been stepping it up . Bombing Campaign in Somalia In Somalia too ! Bombing Campaign in Pakistan Under Obama, there have been more drone strikes in Pakistan than there ever were under Bush, and they're also claiming more civilians lives, Pakistanis claim, leading the country into uproar and protest against the United States. Bombing Campaign in Libya In March of 2011, President Obama took America to war in an entirely new country, Libya, taking sides with insurgents in a civil war against a dictator that Washington has supported for years up until now. Expanding Bush's old wars wasn't enough it would seem; Obama had to start some new ones of his own, against a country that had not attacked us and did not threaten us . And get this: in all likelihood, we've been fighting on the same side as Al-Qaeda in Libya's civil war! Defense Spending Levels "Defense" spending has only gone up during President Obama's first term from $616 billion under Bush in 2008 to $768 billion in 2011, and Obama still wants even more . We were promised change. Why are we spending even more on bombs and bullets? Record Casualty Levels Under Obama, the wars haven't just gotten bigger, more numerous, and even more legally dubious than under Bush (more on that later)-- they've gotten deadlier. According to the most up-to-date figures as of this publication, under Obama, the U.S. casualty rate in Afghanistan is five times greater than it was under Bush. "Overseas Contingency Operations" Despite ramping the Global War on Terror up to unprecedented levels as detailed above, the Obama Administration decided to seriously downplay its title by renaming it "Overseas Contingency Operations." Chillingly Orwellian, isn't it? And quite typically Obama: make no substantive changes at all (other than to make things worse and accelerate the damage done by Bush), but do make a big deal about changing a name or a logo! God and War Rhetoric is similar to Bush's, even to the point of invoking God in our fight against other countries, and "refusing to apologize" for our way of life (which apparently includes bombing everybody else): ================================================================ The Vast Police State Bush critics consider his presidency to have inaugurated an era unprecedented in U.S. history for violations of civil liberties, privacy, and the constitutional amendments that protect Americans from unwarranted police actions by the government. On one of the most important issues of our era, Obama is indistinguishable from Bush. He supports the (un)Patriot(ic) Act. The TSA Created by an act of Congress during the Bush Administration, and organized within the Department of Homeland Security, the TSA has been annoying and harassing passengers at airports for a decade now. But under President Obama, it has become more aggressive and oppressive than it ever was under Bush, with the installment of dozens of radiation-emitting "naked body scanners" throughout the country and directives from the DHS to use "enhanced" pat downs that many critics say amount to sexual assault. Under Bush, the TSA was merely annoying. Under Obama, it is horrifyingly out of control . The War on Drugs The decades-long "War on Drugs" has been a spectacular failure of public policy, resulting in billions of wasted dollars, record levels of incarceration, higher rates of drug fatalities, and the creation of a violent international criminal drug cartel that thrives on continued prohibition. The 2009 Ogden Memo signaled that Obama might change course in the failed "War on Drugs." Nope. In July 2011, the Justice Department published a new memo indicating that things would stay just the same as they were under George W. Bush. CIA Rendition The CIA's "extraordinary rendition" program consists of seizing "terror suspects," detaining them without warrant or trial, and sending them offshore to outsource their "interrogation" to third world countries where they are tortured for information and confessions. Seriously. Torture was one of the big criticisms faced by the Bush Administration, and in February 2009, the Obama Administration wasted no time in quietly retaining the practice of rendition. Habeas Corpus The Obama Administration also continued Bush's suspension of the long-standing legal tradition of habeas corpus, insisting that it has the right to detain suspected terrorists indefinitely without trial. You Do Not Have The Right To Remain Silent The Obama Administration actually had the gall to ask "the Supreme Court to overrule long-standing law that stops police from initiating questions unless a defendant's lawyer is present, another stark example of the White House seeking to limit rather than expand rights." or Test Genetic Evidence Used Against You The Obama Administration has also limited "the rights of prisoners to test genetic evidence used to convict them." The DHS and Swine Flu The Obama Administration further empowered the growing police state and set a chilling precedent when it let the Department of Homeland Security manage a health issue, a strain of flu referred to as "swine flu." the DHS declared a state of emergency in the U.S. and got out in front of the (manufactured) swine flu "crisis." ========================================================================== Disregard for the Constitution and Unchecked Executive Power President Bush will be forever remembered by critics for his "imperial presidency," his usurpation of power from the other branches of government in violation of the Constitution. Instead of a nation guided by laws, under Bush our country descended even further into the lawless anarchy of executive tyranny, unchecked by the other branches of government and unrestrained by the Constitution. An autocrat, Bush did as he pleased, whether the law permitted it or not. Obama has been no different. Actually, he's been worse: Faith-Based Initiatives Obama curiously continued Bush's unconstitutional faith-based initiatives (ever heard of the First Amendment?). Signing Statements On the campaign trail, Obama called presidential "signing statements" (letters of interpretation and recommendations attached to Congressional legislation) unconstitutional and promised not to use them... then attached a signing statement to a $410 billion spending bill as president. If you want to know why this is a dangerous usurpation of power by the executive, click that first link above and Obama will it explain it to you himself. This also counts as a broken promise, which you'll read plenty more of soon. Hillary Clinton Appointment Unconstitutional . If you think I'm splitting hairs, you can bite me. War in Libya We already touched on this as one of Obama's expansions to Bush's open-ended warfare, but I didn't mention one key thing: this was was completely unconstitutional. Obama went to war in Libya without a formal declaration from Congress-- without even consulting Congress-- and according to both the War Powers Resolution and the U.S. Constitution itself, it is only the people's representatives in Congress that can take our nation to war, not the president alone. Even Obama's own defense secretary said that America faced no imminent threat from Libya. Here are Obama's own words on the matter back when he was a senator: "The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation." Czars One significant change that will forever characterize the Obama administration is its radical and unprecedented expansion of a policy that started in the Nixon administration-- the unconstitutional appointment of "czars" as "principle officers" of policy within the administration who answer solely to the president without the advice and consent of Congress. By most recent estimates, Obama has appointed 41 of these "czars" to high level posts within his administration. It is exactly this kind of centralization of executive power, isolated from the advice, consent, and oversight of the people via their representatives that worried Democrats about President George W. Bush. Before he died, even the Democrats' most senior senator, Robert Byrd, condemned Obama "czar strategy" as an unprecedented and illegal power grab that centralizes power in the executive, evades congressional oversight, and violates the separation of powers required by law in the Constitution. Distribution of TARP funds Though you will read about just a few broken promises in a minute, one promise Obama has kept is the distribution of TARP 11 Funds to non-financial institutions, which is contrary to the stated intention of those funds in the legislation passed by Congress, making his action illegal, un-Constitutional, and an expansion of unlimited executive power. Health provisions in the stimulus bill Though hardly mentioned by the news media, the health provisions in the 2009 stimulus package passed by Obama represent a giant leap towards fascist medicine in this country. Census Bureau Grab Obamas move of the United States Census out of the Department of Commerce and under the direct control of the White House, was Un Constitutional, politically motivated , and a dangerous undemocratic expansion of executive power. Forcing US banks to accept TARP money What's worse than bailing out wealthy banks with money taken from poor and middle class Americans? Forcing wealthy banks to take the bailout money against their will. Rebuking SCOTUS This was extremely unusual and entirely unseemly for a President of the United States to do during a State of the Union Address. ========================================================================== Many Lies and Broken Promises Lies, lies, lies. The Bush Administration was marred by lies and broken campaign promises. His administration looked nothing like the promises he made during the 2000 Presidential Campaign. The Obama Administration has been no different: Non-Emergency Legislation Obama promised to "publish all non-emergency legislation to the website for five days... before the President signs it," then broke that promise over and over again . (This is also a big transparency problem... more of those later.) Lobbyists Despite promising to keep lobbyists out of his administration, Obama broke his word again and again (making 17 exceptions to this promise in his first two weeks as president). Income Tax Cuts for Seniors Obama promised to eliminate income taxation for seniors making less than $50,000 a year. He has broken this promise despite numerous opportunities to keep it, including the economic stimulus package and his administration's first budget proposal. Tax Credit for Businesses The President also boasted during his campaign that "During 2009 and 2010, existing businesses will receive a $3,000 refundable tax credit for each additional full-time employee hired," and has failed to keep his word . Retirement Accounts Obama made it part of his agenda to "allow withdrawals of 15% up to $10,000 from retirement accounts without penalty (although subject to the normal taxes). This would apply to withdrawals in 2008 (including retroactively) and 2009," but didn't include this measure in the stimulus package or his budget proposal. The Armenian Genocide Obama broke his promise to recognize the Armenian genocide of its Christians by Muslims. broke his promise Tax Credit for College Tuition On the campaign trail, Obama promised a $4000 tax credit for college tuition, but backpedaled when he signed a much smaller $2,500 college tax credit into law. The Partisan Tenor Obama promised a different tone in Washington D.C. and a move past bitter partisan rhetoric. It took him less then a week as President to berate Republicans and sully the dignity of his office by picking a very public rhetorical fight with a private citizen named Rush Limbaugh. Dog-Gone Lies If you can't trust someone with little things, you certainly can't trust them with bigger things. I'm smart. You're dumb I'm smart. You're dumb. I'm right. You're wrong. Shut up and take it. That's pretty much what Obama said when asked about public opinion against raising the debt ceiling. Even Bush wasn't this arrogant, and that's saying something. Schooled in Hypocrisy Obama's daughters attend a private school in Washington D.C., enjoying the freedom of educational choice that the Obama Administration has denied to poor children who live in Washington (more on that later... when you read it, you're going to flip your lid). Inauguration Footprint Despite claiming our environment is in a state of crisis, Obama's extravagant inauguration alone emitted over 500 million pounds of CO2 . Inauguration Price Obama's lavish inauguration also cost a whopping $170 million . Then it was not published to the White House website for five days before Obama signed it despite his campaign promise to do so. Closed door health care meetings (C-SPAN) Despite Obama's promise to televise the health care debate on C-SPAN, the debate and ultimate passage of the "ObamaCare" bill happened without a public debate, behind closed doors , in secret meetings. More broken promises. Less transparency. HHS "Transparency" President Obama's rationing czar, who controls the health care of 1 in 3 Americans and has a budget larger than the freaking Pentagon's refuses to answer questions, grant interviews, or testify before Congress. DC Voucher Program The Obama Administration ended funding for Washington D.C.'s school voucher program, while suppressing a study that showed it delivered better results at a lower cost. Less transparency, lower quality education, and higher costs. Brilliant. Prisoner Abuse Photos In 2010 watchdog group,OpenTheGovernment.org found that the Obama Administration, following in the steps of the Bush Administration, continued to block the release of photos depicting prisoner abuse by American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan State Secrets Privilege and CIA torture The same group also noted that Obama's administration continued to invoke the state secrets privilege in cases involving alleged CIA torture. Declassifications Drop Further, they found that in 2009, fewer pages (28.8 million) were declassified governmentwide and the declassification rate fell significantly-from 61% of all material reviewed in 2008 to 55% in 2009. Only one question After the Department of Homeland Security circulated a memo to state police departments warning of "right-wing" terrorism, Secretary Janet Napolitano did an interview, but would only answer one question with no follow ups about the memo. Most Anti-Leak Administration Ever The Obama Administration has proven far more aggressive than the Bush Administration in seeking to punish whistle-blowers within the administration. ========================================================================== Out Of Control Spending Especially during the debt ceiling debate that raged all Summer of 2011, Democrats were quick to point out the " balanced budgets " of the Clinton years. Many of Bush's critics excoriated him for wrecking America's fiscal solvency and running up federal budget deficits unprecedented in U.S. history. It was completely irresponsible. MoveOn.org even made a famous ad showing children working in factories before posing the question: "Guess who's going to pay for Bush's deficits?" Guess who's going to pay for Obama's even bigger deficits? Those same future generations of children: Spending WAY MORE than Bush Yeah, Bush's deficits were bad. But if you really believe that, you've got to be willing to condemn Obama's even bigger deficits. Here's a pretty good look with some hard figures at just how the two presidents compare. Bush was bad. Obama has been much worse. Earmarks Obama did a shameless 180 degree turn on earmarks by sharply criticizing them (and bragging that he would pass legislation without a single one) and then signing a spending bill with literally thousands of them. Stimulus Package There went $800 billion in productive capital right down the drain . Health Care Bill Another $900 billion . TARP I know this passed while Bush was president. But guess which then-senator gets some of the blame too because he voted to send it across Bush's desk? Barack Obama. $700 billion. Gosh, all these hundreds of billions add up to trillions real fast! Bailing out Greece Meanwhile, as America faces a fiscal crisis in 2011 because of all the aforementioned spending bills in 2008 - 2009, Obama thinks we have enough money to bailout another country halfway around the world. Appointing Ben Bernanke Another continuation of Bush era economics, fiscal policy, and monetary policy: Obama's appointment of Ben Bernanke to another term as Fed Chair. Are you convinced that Mr. Obama is not so different from Mr. Bush yet? Measly $100 million "cut" But remember, this is Obama, so he's got to keep up appearances, which is why he made a big show of challenging his cabinet to cut a measly $100 million from the Federal budget (a .0027% cut in Federal spending... also, he admitted that this doesn't even represent a spending cut by saying that it will free up more money for Federal spending on other things like health and education). ========================================================================== Fear Mongering One of the worst aspects of the Bush Administration (and a complicit media) was its use of fearmongering and panic to scare the American people into accepting its relentless march on our freedoms. In 2008, people clamored for a reasoned voice of hope. Instead, they got Obama: Stimulus Package Shrill : "If nothing is done, this recession could linger for years. The unemployment rate could reach double digits. For every day we wait or point fingers or drag our feet, more Americans will lose their jobs. More families will lose their savings. More dreams will be deferred and denied. And our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse." Valentine's Day Vacation And we know it was just fear mongering because if Obama had meant the above words in earnest, then after passage of the stimulus ACT, he would not have taken off on a ritzy Valentine's Day vacation in Chicago for the weekend instead of signing the stimulus bill he said needed to be passed as soon as possible to avert an irreversable economic meltdown. Also file this one under hypocrisy and lies. Debt Ceiling Obama knew full well that he was lying and fearmongering when he said that he could not guarantee Social Security checks would make it out to their beneficiaries if the debt limit wasn't raised by August 2nd. Without borrowing money, the federal government takes in $200 billion in receivables each month, plenty enough to service interest on the national debt, write Social Security checks, and continue military operations. Health Care Bill If you'll remember with me, the level of panicked rhetoric over health care in this country was at a fever pitch during the months leading up to passage of this bill. Along with the sanctimony, the secrecy, the backroom deals, the sudden changes in votes, the lack of public support, the narrow margin of passage, the size of the bill itself, and the fact that no one had actually read it before voting on it, the storyline was no different from passage of Bush's Medicare Part D (which many Democrats opposed). DHS Memo This shrill gem published in the early days of the Obama Administration instructed state police departments that both active and inactive US military personnel are potential domestic terrorists, comparing them to Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. Additional potential terrorists, according to the memo, included Tea Party protesters, anyone who vocally supports the amendments in the Bill of Rights, and anyone who is vocally pro-life. Swine Flu Jon Stewart says it best . Patriot Act Renewal It was the same old line used by the Bush Administration. We need these tools to deal with the terrorists. If we don't renew the Patriot Act, America will be less safe. Blah blah blah blah blah. The various US Dollar platforms are either undergoing seizure or suffering from abandonment by primary players. The grand Reich Finance application is failing finally, with extraordinary lies, propaganda, market rigging, doctored statistics, and $trillion patches leaking. The Western banking system is being lashed at another level, after the multi-lateral lashing with derivatives tied the big Western banks all together following the Lehman killjob in 2008. A new global lashing has begun to show itself, yet another obscenity. Witness the export of QE ( Quantitative E asing) globally by the US Fed via the unlimited vast Dollar Swap facilities (massive slush funds). The new 5 BLICS nations under Western thumb are being used to purchase huge tracts of US Treasury Bonds, surely using Dollar Swap funds, on behalf of the US Fed master criminal organization. One is left to wonder what the sweetener was for the five nations, like perhaps shared narcotics funds, or a promise of hidden banking system relief. The self-dealing using nations to buy USTBonds with free money has come to the fore, in another desperate attempt to save the system. It cannot be saved. It is cratering. It is rotting from the inside. It is fracturing. It will fail. The fiat paper currency system and its many attendant systems are seizing up, being rejected, and are failing in what has begun to be the grandest financial event in modern history. Review many of the extreme events in progress to conclude a systemic failure occurring in full view. It will be very difficult to paint this wall effectively with a phony message before it crumbles and falls. World's central banks hit the panic button in early May. Once again their actions are proving that all Western markets are rigged. For Germany and Italy each to sport negative (or near negative) bond yields on their 10-year security is a grand obscenity and perversion. Bond market bailout is constant, control universal, using derivative props, a true disappearance of free markets. The US Treasury Bond market has been effectively destroyed, the convulsion phase having begun. The QE is not stimulus, but instead more like an overdose of potassium to the heart. The US Treasury Bond market is dying a horrible death. It is ruined by US Fed monetary policy, in parallel to the wrecked economies from capital destruction. QE is fast killing the USTBond market, whose dead features are easily identified. The systemic risk is rising quickly. A solution is urgently required, rooted in Gold. - US Treasury Bond market volume is down markedly to danger levels - US Fed is the principal buyer, lapping up all paper sold - US Fed soaks up Indirect Exchange in the $billions for foreign asset purchases - US Fed uses fake money to cover hidden derivative losses in the $trillions - US Fed balance sheet has turned toxic, with cancerous growth - REPO market dried up, stuck in reverse - Dollar Swap market dried up, stuck in reverse - Negative interest rates at big banks, stuck in reverse - Yields are hyper-sensitive with no stability, due to diminished liquidity - Money market funds are a wasteland with no returns given - Hidden Petro-Dollar damage from dismantled derivatives - Strain to the primary bond dealers (surprised not all dead yet) - Strain to pension funds and insurance companies, stuck in mud - The US Fed is exploiting secondary nations to export QE, a global lashing. MEET THE BLICS NATIONS The US Fed is using derivatives and formal vehicles to integrate the bond monetization scheme. To be sure, QE is being exported via a global integration process, using several front offices under control. A vast new lattice work is under hidden construction. They involve permanent reciprocal currency arrangments, whereby foreign outpost central banks tap Dollar Swap lines to invest in US Treasurys. Witness emergence of the BLICS (not BRICS) nations, a new proxy entity. QE is being exported. The systemic risk is being spread to secondary nations, whose endorsement might be laced with deep bribery and privilege, if not protection. The credit goes to Chris Hamilton, in his Hambone's Stuff analysis. The Jackass takes no credit, except to stand on a hill and trumpet the QE export claim in global contamination of the monetary system and universal spread of risk. The banking leaders who have sacked control of the US Govt have a perverse practice to inform their victims. US Economic growth has been both a fraud and a fallacy since 2007. Both Zero Interest Rate Policy and Quantitative Easing serve as life support in a bizarre episode from the Twilight Zone which has merged with our reality. The US Federal Reserve is using 17 central banks working in concert through currency swaps to maintain the fraudulent monetary system, which are probably tied into Forward Rate Agreements (FRA) and Interest Rate Swap derivatives between central banks. Chris Hamilton states, "QE is when the US Fed and US Govt stepped in and took over the economy in order maintain asset values. The US Fed and US Govt intervened in markets to artificially increase asset prices and create enhance the wealth effect for unsuspecting sheeple masses. The global govternments and central banks began their debt binge to postpone the inevitable crash, kicking the can down the road. The landing strip is fast approaching and the plane's nose is down, but the plane's landing gear wheels are not. What comes is a crash of epic proportions or a statist market take-over, or possibly a market holiday where asset valuations are politically determined and set by controlling governments." The end of free markets occurred long ago. Next comes the end in a politically stamped and approved openly visible process, where working toward a controlled financial economy has failed in a glorious manner. In the last three years, tremendous distress has befallen the US Treasury Bond complex. If not the London Whale event, or JP Morgan bankers leaping out of buildings, or the Belgium Bulge of $420bn in USTBonds exposed, it has been misdirections like Operation Twist to conceal the vast shifts behind the US Fed walls. Legitimate buyers of USTBonds have largely vanished. Taking their place is the main QE window, JP Morgan derivative machinery, Wall Street carry trade, and hidden BLICS hands. The US Fed has exported QE while it claims to wind it down. The criminal banking syndicate has been integrating the USTBond purchase program to new proxy fronts. The TIC Report reveals their identity, all friends to the fascist state. Notice the huge decline in official bond holdings by the typical traditional former allies. No more! BELGIUM, LUXEMBOURG, IRELAND, CAYMAN, SWISS The hidden evidence is coming to the fore. The challenge is to identify which entities are buying US Govt debt in the form of US Treasury Bonds. The US Fed is no longer permitted to purchase additional US Govt debt issuances due to its ownership limits, unless it changes the portfolio rules. Or else, the US Fed chooses not to add to its $4.5 trillion toxic balance sheet, since wrecked beyond repair. In recent months, six nations have been carrying the load of maintaining US Treasury yields at ZIRP. Those nations are Japan and the BLICS: Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Cayman Islands, and Switzerland. From June 2011 to January 2015, the US Fed has bought $825bn in US Treasurys, while the BLICS have quietly bought $818bn in US Treasurys during the same timespan. These are small nations without huge trade surpluses. The source of data is the Treasury International Capital (TIC) Report provided by the Federal Reserve itself. The only remaining offices for purchasing US Treasury debt securities comes down to just Japan and BLICS nations. The US Govt and US Fed have conspired as a Ponzi Scheme, using digital counterfeit to purchase perhaps all net new US Treasury debt since July 2011. QE has been exported in a den of thieves and a nest of lies. Hamilton makes several conclusions regarding the massive project over the last few years. It is the US Fed's backdoor QE initiative to conceal the QE to Infinity (as Jackass describes it). They use central bank currency swaps principally. He asserts the following. Excellent intrepid work by Chris Hamilton, in his Hambone's Stuff. See Economica ( HERE ). 1) Fed likely uses off-shore locations to maintain continued US Treasury buying because of limits established by Ownership Limit rules. 2) Fed created currency swaps to provide US Dollars to other country's central banks. 3) In December 2007, the Fed's FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) announced it had authorized temporary Reciprocal Currency Arrangements (central bank liquidity swap lines) with the European Central Bank and the Swiss National Bank to provide US Dollars to these central banks. 4) By April 2009 the swap lines were extended to 11 more central banks including the Banks of: England, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Singapore. 5) The Fed has maintained that these swaps are not being utilized, in steady lies. 6) In October 2013, the Fed and its recently partnered 13 central banks announced that the existing temporary liquidity swap arrangements had been converted to standing arrangements that will remain in place until further notice. In other words, the temporary currency (liquidity) swap arrangements between central banks became permanent until further notice in October of 2013. FINANCIAL SYSTEM IN TRANSITION The Western financial system is collapsing. Experts know it but remain silent. Time is running out on both the US Economy and the US nation. The US Dollar is soon to fade into oblivion. The hidden dismantle of the Petro-Dollar mechanism has been full of intrigue. It has been followed by the seizure of the sovereign bond markets amidst grotesque blemishes like negative rates and perverted money market funds. Given the massive US Treasury Bond dumping soon to arrive, the facilities are in place to soak up the volume, even while deceiving on the limits imposed on the US Fed itself. Be sure to know that true QE volume in total is possibly over $1 trillion per quarter. It is a backdoor bailout of Wall Street banks, given a phony label of stimulus. Arsenic and hemlock are stimulus also, if one considers convulsions as activity. The Gold Standard will return, but through the trade window. The many crucial new Gold platforms are being assembled, one by one. The most recent platform in view is the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, which will render obsolete both the Intl Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Actually, the IMF will be useful for China to seed the global banking system with a few types of RMB-based bonds. These Chinese Yuan denominated bonds will have a few flavors. In addition to the Chinese Govt Bonds, expect the arrival of some other sovereign bonds held in RMB denomination. They might include UK Govt Bonds or Italian Govt Bonds, even assorted Western corporate bonds, which will reduce investor risk. The Chinese took control of the IMF, not just to shut it down, but to exploit it as a warehouse distribution center and primary model. They have an agenda. As the global banks place more RMB bonds in their reserves shelves, they will find the US Treasurys of much reduced function and use. Further accumulation of US Treasurys will not occur in the entire Eastern banking system. They will be converted conveniently to Gold bullion during the restoration phase. The Chinese hand moving the IMF lever is a brilliant stroke. Other important steps are in progress. Last weekend, the Chinese announced the creation of a new fund which will operate more like a window to convert sovereign bonds to Gold bullion in very high volume. The target is the ever-present toxic US Govt debt paper cluttering and contaminating the global banking system. The conversion to Gold bullion will be seen as a declaration of financial war. We are entering a new phase. Nothing vague or ambiguous about the official statement. Israel President says Israelis and Palestinians both connected to the land, and any attempt to force either side to relinquish its narrative 'destined to fail'. The President also said that Jews must acknowledge that Arabs are also part and parcel of this land, and that it is time to take very real measures to establish a new Arab city in Israel -- In an impassioned plea for Jewish-Arab amity, President Reuven Rivlin on Thursday called on all political camps in Israel to take up the cause of reconciliation, insisting the country's future depends on forging a "shared Israeli identity" that acknowledges Arabs as "part and parcel of this land." Addressing the leadership of the International Friends of Givat Haviva (The Center for a Shared Society), which presented him with an award for his work toward coexistence, Rivlin laid out the steps he said would ultimately establish trust between Israel's Jewish and Arab citizens. " t is important to say that the vision of living together, so needed in Israeli society, is one that deals with the shaping of a civil language, with the building of a joint economy, and with the forging of a shared Israeli identity," he said. "This is a vision, and an Israeli hope, of which we are in need." Rivlin said that opposing narratives were at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a "zero sum game between identities, between national stories. "My independence is your catastrophe," he said, alluding to the Palestinian Nakba, marked with an annual day of mourning that coincides with Israel's celebration of its independence in 1948. "You build your identity, which negates mine, and I build my identity, which negates yours." In order to begin to mend the relationship between Jews and Arabs, he continued, it was "essential" for both groups to "recognize this, as painful as it may be," before moving on to "nurture the positive identities of each side, and from within these identities, reach out to the other's culture and story." Further appealing to both sides to recognizing each other's identities, he said the pride of both Jews and Palestinians lays "in the honor and the importance we attribute to the chain of generations, the spiritual inheritance from our forefathers, and our connection to our land." Israeli Jews, he said, "need to acknowledge that the Arab public is part and parcel of this land - a public shaped by a collective cultural identity." Attempts to achieve change by expecting one side to relinquish its identity, Rivlin continued, are "destined to fail." Besides recognizing Arab national and cultural identities, Rivlin also said that more practical steps must be carried out by the Israeli government in order to attain trust. "Equal access to resources, and to employment and economic opportunities, are a basic condition for trust. Just as they are the basic obligations of a democratic state toward its citizens." He further added that just as Israel's Arab population must needs learn Hebrew "to perfection," the time has come for the Arabic language to also be studied by the Jewish population. Language, he said, "leads from the ear to the heart." Rivlin, a former Knesset member for the ruling right-wing Likud party, hinted that not enough is being done by his own political camp to promote trust. "The mission of building confidence between the Jewish and Arab communities is not solely the task of the left or any particular political camp. It is the mission of all for whom this land is dear. "No single political camp can be allowed to take ownership, or dictate the language of this task. Just as no single camp can shirk its responsibility toward this task. The fact that the subject has become associated with a particular camp, both on the Jewish and Arab sides, is nothing short of tragic," he added. The key to a breakthrough, according to Rivlin, is to enlist new forces from the mainstream of both societies. "The dealing with the relations between Arabs and Jews, must be moved into the mainstream's consciousness; in the public, political and media spheres." Rivlin seemed to be hitting many of the same notes voiced by Joint (Arab) List leader MK Ayman Odeh, who, at the same event, called for the Israeli government to grant the Arab population wider national rights. http://ift.tt/1J9BqDN 28.05.2015 Author: Steven MacMillan This summer, British scientists are expected to begin field trials of a genetically modified (GMO) potato dubbed by proponents the 'super spud' , whose developers boast will be free of fungal diseases and other pest problems. GMO maize and oil seed rape could also be grown in England by the end of this year, as Westminster is pushing for more GMO foods to be introduced into the UK food supply. In March of last year, David Cameron's chief science advisers (Zionists) pressed for the government to allow the cultivation and spread of GMO crops in Britain, in addition to criticising "dysfunctional" European Union (EU) regulations which at the time restricted the quantity of GMO food in the European food supply. EU law has changed since then however, allowing individual EU governments to decide whether or not to allow GMO crops to be grown in their countries, with many seeing this as a backdoor for Big-Agri to push their products on the continent. "It is a stunning defeat and will result in a massive spread of GMO crops in the EU for the first time," was how strategic risk consultant and author William Engdahl described the move in an article for New Eastern Outlook titled: Monsanto's Trojan Horse will eat in EU Fields . Britain looks set to follow in America's footsteps as the US had allowed an abundance of GMO products into its food supply. "Currently, up to 93% of U.S. corn is genetically engineered (GE), as are 94% of soybeans and 96% of cotton (cottonseed oil is often used in food products). It has been estimated that upwards of 75% of processed foods on supermarket shelves - from soda to soup, crackers to condiments - contain genetically engineered ingredients", according to the Center for Food Safety . The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also recently approved the planting of GMO potatoes and GMO apples , further opening up the US agricultural sector to GMO crops. Paradoxically, despite many in Washington pushing for more GMO's, ordinary Americans are increasingly buying organic as the dangers of GMO foods becomes more apparent, with US farmers having to import organic produce to meet growing organic demand . Let's hope this trend continues into the future, as supermarkets and other retailers will respond to consumer demand if it starts to infringe on their profits. Monsanto's Roundup "Probably" Causes Cancer Despite many in the political and corporate sphere dogmatically arguing that GMO foods are safe to consume, copious volumes of scientific research completely contradicts this argument. In March, the World Health Organisations (WHO) cancer agency - the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) - conducted a study on glyphosate, the main ingredient in the most widely used weedkiller in the world, Monsanto's Roundup. The IARC study chillingly concluded that glyphosate "probably" causes cancer in addition to revealing it was "classified as probably carcinogenic to humans". Last year, a comprehensive report by The Ministry of Health in Cordoba, Argentina, found that in areas where GMO crops are grown and agro-chemicals are used, cancer rates are double the national average. In 2012, Dr. Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen led a study which examined the long term health effects on rats that had consumed Monsanto's GM corn and its Roundup herbicide. The peer-reviewed study was conducted over a 2 year period - which is the average life-span of a rat - as opposed to Monsanto's usual period of 90 days, and discovered horrifying effects on the rats health, with a 200% to 300% increase in large tumours, severe organ damage to the kidney and liver, in addition to 70% of the female rats participating suffering premature death. The first tumours only appeared 4 to 7 months into the research, highlighting the need for longer trials. France , Italy and Poland are among the countries which have banned the cultivation of varieties of GMO maize. A somewhat comical episode (if it wasn't so serious) which illustrates the glaring hypocrisy of many who promote GMO foods, was when Big-Agri lobbyist Patrick Moore was asked to drink a glass of glyphosate during an interview with French investigative journalist and filmmaker Paul Moreira. Below is a transcript of the interview: Moore: Do not believe that glyphosate in Argentina is causing increases in cancer. You can drink a whole quart of it and it won't hurt you. Interviewer (Moreira): You want to drink some? We have some here. Moore: I'd be happy to actually... Not, not really, but... Interviewer: Not really? Moore: I know it wouldn't hurt me. Interviewer: If you say so, I have some glyphosate. Moore: No, I'm not stupid. Interviewer: OK. So you... So it's dangerous, right? Moore: No. People try to commit suicide with it and fail, fairly regularly. Interviewer: Tell the truth. It's dangerous. Moore: It's not dangerous to humans. No, it's not. Interviewer: So you are ready to drink one glass of glyphosate? Moore: No, I'm not an idiot. Moore then storms out of the interview after calling Moreira a "complete jerk". Controversy of a similar nature was sparked in 2010 when Downing Street refused 10 times to say whether David Cameron would eat GMO foods or serve it to his family, raising suspicions as to whether the British Prime Minister follows many other prominent political figures that only eat organic yet often promote GMO's. Cameron has now stated that he would eat GMO and feed it to his family, although many view these comments with scepticism considering his earlier refusal to answer the question. The Sanity of Russian Policy on GMO Foods In contrast to the governments in London and Washington, Moscow has taken responsible and effective action in protecting its food supply from GMO foods. "According to official statistics the share of GMO in the Russian food industry has declined from 12 percent to just 0.01 percent over the past 10 years," as RT reported in November of last year. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedevannounced recently that Russia would not import GMO foods and would concentrate instead on producing organic foods. "If the Americans like to eat GMO products, let them eat it then. We don't need to do that; we have enough space and opportunities to produce organic food," Medvedev remarked. Russia has enacted laws which punish individuals and businesses that violate the GMO labelling laws in the country, with authorities having the power to fine violators in addition to confiscating the products. The Russian scientific community has also voiced skepticism over the safety of GMO foods. At the end of last year, leading Russian scientists urged the government to put a 10-year ban on GMO products so that researchers could vigorously study the health implications of the products on humans. This seems a logical and sensible recommendation for other governments around the world to follow (if they haven't already), as it is clear there are serious questions over the safety of GMO's. The good news is that demand for organic food continues to skyrocket as people around the globe become increasingly aware of the dangers of GMO foods. Let's ensure this trend continues into the future and we leave our children a healthy, clean and safe food supply! In a letter dated June 21, he was informed that his tax records had been "selected for examination" by the Internal Revenue Service. Two weeks after receiving the IRS letter, Mr. VanderSloot received another-this one from the Department of Labor. The ranch was fined $8,400, mainly for too many "flies" and for "grease build-up" on the stove. God forbid a cattle ranch home has flies. Obama gave the Medal of Freedom to communist Dolores Huerta, and refused to let an anti-communist hero Lech Walesa into the White House President Obama gave Dolores Huerta the Medal of Freedom, the highest honor that can be given to a civilian. Huerta has praised Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan communist dictator who had repeatedly used the military to seize food from private owners. Chavez also had butchers arrested, held at a military base, and strip searched for running out of beef. In addition, he shut down a TV station that criticized him. Chavez placed a "luxury tax" on toilet paper . After Chavez seized farmland from farmers, Chavez stated , "The land is not private. It is the property of the state." Chavez has seized many supermarkets from their owners, and under government ownership, the shelves in these supermarkets are often empty . Chavez's mismanagement of the nationalized oil industry is so severe that the country has actually had to import gasoline, despite having some of the hugest oil reserves in the world. Chavez's takeovers have also caused severe damage to the steel industry, the cement industry, the construction industry, the telephone industry, and the electric industry. He has also caused a brain drain , with many of the most intelligent and well educated people fleeing the country. Meanwhile, Lech Walesa was a major participant in the defeat of communism in Eastern Europe. National Review wrote : Lech Walesa was once a trade-union activist. He was often arrested for speaking his mind against Communist oppression behind the Iron Curtain in Poland and for defying the Soviet Union. He was an electrician who, with no higher education, led one of the most profound freedom movements of the 20th century - Solidarity. He became president of Poland and swept in reforms, pushing the Soviet Union out of his homeland and moving the country toward a free-market economy and individual liberty. But President Obama wouldn't even let Walesa in the White House . Obama gave the highest civilian award to someone who wants the U.S. to copy the policies of communist dictator Hugo Chavez. And at the same time, Obama refused to let an anti-communist hero into the White House. Gave illegal EPA exemption to one oil refinery, and would not say which refinery it was The EPA has a very expensive ethanol mandate that applies to all oil refineries. However, later that same day, Geller said that the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security had not contacted her. Obama broke the same law that Martha Stewart had gone to prison for breaking Solyndra's shareholders and executives made substantial donations to Obama's campaign, the company spent a large sum of money on lobbying the Obama administration, and its executives had many meetings with Obama White House officials. Afterward, Obama gave $535 million of taxpayers' money to Solyndra. Before Obama gave the money to Solyndra, Obama had already been aware of Solyndra's financial troubles. For example, according to the company's security filings in 2009, the company had been selling its product for less than the cost of production. In 2010, Obama visited the Solyndra factory and cited it as a role model for his "stimulus" program, saying "It's here that companies like Solyndra are leading the way toward a brighter and more prosperous future." The Washington Post wrote of this, "Administration officials and outside advisers warned that President Obama should consider dropping plans to visit a solar startup company in 2010 because its mounting financial problems might ultimately embarrass the White House." Solyndra was a private company, but had been planning to use its government funding as a means of going public - so when Obama knowingly overstated the company's condition in order to help his friends at Solyndra, he broke the same law that Martha Stewart had been sent to prison for breaking. Fraudulently declared meadow jumping mouse "endangered" in order to hurt ranchers On May 24, 2014, Wikipedia's article on the meadow jumping mouse stated : The meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius) is the most widely distributed mouse in the subfamily Zapodinae. It may be found from the Atlantic coast, to the Great Plains, as far north as the arctic tree lines in Canada and Alaska, and as far south as Georgia, Alabama, Arizona, and New Mexico. The meadow jumping mouse is currently not in any kind of danger. According to the IUCN Red list, it is widely spread, common, and not declining throughout most of its extensive range. It is also present in many protected areas, and so does not have any major threats of it becoming an endangered species. However, on July 3, 2014, the Daily Caller reported : Feds Declare Mouse Endangered, Family Might Lose Everything A family's livestock enterprise in New Mexico is in danger of being completely shut down now that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has declared the meadow jumping mouse to be an endangered species... The new regulations came into effect from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service last month, and as a result, the U.S. Forest Service is considering installing 8-foot high fences to protect the mouse, which would permanently prevent the Lucero family's livestock from grazing. The family is already in possession of grazing permits from the federal government, but the permits become irrelevant in the event that a new species is declared endangered. The Lucero family has had their livestock graze on the land in the Santa Fe National Forest for more than a century, starting first with sheep, but then switching to cattle in the 1920s. Obama's declaration of this animal as being "endangered" is contrary to all scientific evidence, and is just a cover for his war on ranchers. Those must be excellent workers, right? Actually, no. The article also says: "San Francisco State University management professor John Sullivan, an expert on employee turnover, says the low departure rates show a failure to release poor performers and those with obsolete skills. 'Rather than indicating something positive, rates below 1% in the firing and layoff components would indicate a serious management problem,' he says." A serious management problem? So who exactly is the highest ranking manager of the federal government? It's President Obama. Obama had anti-Obama filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza arrested for violating campaign finance laws, even though Obama himself had violated campaign finance laws three different times without being arrested In August 2012, Dinesh D'Souza released 2016: Obama's America , a movie that was critical of Obama. In January 2014, D'Souza was arrested for violating campaign finance laws. In May 2014, D'Souza pled guilty to violating campaign finance laws. In September 2014, D'Souza was sentenced to live in a halfway house for eight months, pay a $30,000 fine, perform 260 days of community service, and receive counseling. However, even though Obama himself had violated campaign finance laws on three different occasions (see here , here , and here ), Obama never had himself arrested. Numerous legal experts have said that D'Souza's arrest was politically motivated. Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz said of D'Souza's arrest: "This is clearly a case of selective prosecution for one of the most common things done during elections, which is to get people to raise money for you...If they went after everyone who did this, there would be no room in jails for murderers." "This is an outrageous prosecution and is certainly a misuse of resources. It raises the question of why he is being selected for prosecution among the many, many people who commit similar crimes... This sounds to me like it is coming from higher places. It is hard for me to believe this did not come out of Washington or at least get the approval of those in Washington." Former Federal Election Commissioner David Mason said of D'Souza's arrest: "What struck me first was that it is unusual in cases like these for the FBI to go out and actually arrest someone, simply because it is not necessary... Furthermore, Obama had been on the board of directors of the Woods Fund when it gave ACORN $75,000 in 2001, and $70,000 in 2002. Also, during the 2008 primary campaign, Obama's campaign had given Citizens Services Inc. , an ACORN affiliate, more than $800,000 for "get out the vote" efforts. However, Obama's campaign had falsely told the FEC that the money was for "staging, sound, lighting." Illegally changed Obamacare to benefit members of Congress and their staff Obamacare was passed by the House and Senate, and signed by President Obama. Three years later, members of Congress and their staff complained that Obamacare was going to cost them a lot of money, and said that this would likely cause a brain drain among their staff. In response to this, Obama made changes to Obamacare so that these things would not happen. However, Obama's actions were illegal, because he made these changes without Congress voting on them first. The New York Times wrote of this: ... the language of the health care law requires Congressional employees to obtain health insurance through an exchange created by the law, but other parts of the federal legal code restrict the ability of the federal government to pay the usual employer share for group insurance programs approved by the Office of Personnel Management. A straightforward reading of the law thus means that Congressional staff members, starting in January 2014, will have to obtain insurance through the Affordable Care Act but pay for it on their own without the normal contribution from their employer - Congress. This would be a multi-thousand-dollar income hit for those affected... many... would potentially feel the pain, giving rise to concerns over a potential brain drain of Congressional staff members finding other employment. ... the federal personnel office initially ruled that Congressional staff members would not be eligible for the subsidies, and then changed this decision under pressure from the White House... Favoritism inevitably leads to corruption, and corruption invites extortion. Ultimately, the rule of law ceases to exist in any recognizable form, and what is left is tyranny." "The now-familiar monthly trickling down of new waivers is, at best, a tacit admission that Obamacare is a failure. So far, seven entire states and 1,372 businesses, unions and other institutions have received waivers from the law. The list includes the administration's friends and allies and, of course, those who have the best lobbyists." "More than 50 percent of the Obamacare waiver beneficiaries are union members, which is striking because union members account for less than 12 percent of the American work force. The same unions that provided more than $120 million to Democrats in the last two elections and, in many cases, openly campaigned in favor of the government takeover of your health care, now celebrate that Obamacare is not their problem." They would be out of business without an FCC license... ... why does the CIN study include newspapers when the FCC has no authority to regulate print media? Also in February 2014, the Washington Examiner wrote : The First Amendment says "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press..." But under the Obama administration, the Federal Communications Commission is planning to send government contractors into the nation's newsrooms to determine whether journalists are producing articles, television reports, Internet content, and commentary that meets the public's "critical information needs." Those "needs" will be defined by the administration, and news outlets that do not comply with the government's standards could face an uncertain future. It's hard to imagine a project more at odds with the First Amendment. If the FCC goes forward, it's not clear what will happen to news organizations that fall short of the new government standards. Perhaps they will be disciplined. Or perhaps the very threat of investigating their methods will nudge them into compliance with the administration's journalistic agenda. What is sure is that it will be a gross violation of constitutional rights. Used Obamacare to illegally give the IRS additional powers without approval from Congress In May 2013 the Washington Post wrote : The law allows the Department of Health and Human Services to set up federal health exchanges in the holdout states. But the statute makes no mention of the IRS providing credits and subsidies through federal exchanges. The IRS resolved this conundrum by denying its existence. In a May 2012 regulatory ruling, it asserted its own right to provide credits outside the state exchanges as the reasonable interpretation of an ambiguous law. But the language of the law is not ambiguous. And health scholars Jonathan Adler and Michael Cannon, in an exhaustive recent analysis, find no justification for the IRS's ruling in the legislative history of Obamacare. "The statute," they argue, "and the lack of any support for the IRS rule in the legislative record put defenders of the IRS rule in the awkward position of arguing that it was so obviously Congress' intent to offer tax credits in federal exchanges that despite a year of debate over the PPACA, it never occurred to anyone to express that intent out loud. A better explanation is that the PPACA's authors miscalculated when they assumed states would establish exchanges." So: The IRS seized the authority to spend about $800 billion over 10 years on benefits that were not authorized by Congress. And the current IRS scandal puts this decision in a new light. What was the role of politics in shaping this regulatory decision? What pressure was applied? Falsely accused a law abiding news reporter of being "an aider and abettor and/or co-conspirator" in a criminal investigation James Rosen is a law abiding reporter for Fox News. However, the Obama administration falsely labeled him as "an aider and abettor and/or co-conspirator" in a criminal investigation when it applied for a warrant to read his emails. The New York Times wrote of this: With the decision to label a Fox News television reporter a possible "co-conspirator" in a criminal investigation of a news leak, the Obama administration has moved beyond protecting government secrets to threatening fundamental freedoms of the press to gather news. Leak investigations usually focus on the source, not the reporter. But, in this case, federal prosecutors also asked a federal judge for permission to examine Mr. Rosen's personal e-mails, arguing that "there is probable cause to believe" Mr. Rosen is "an aider and abettor and/or co-conspirator" in the leak. Though Mr. Rosen was not charged, the F.B.I. request for his e-mail account was granted secretly in late May 2010. The government was allowed to rummage through Mr. Rosen's e-mails for at least 30 days. Michael Clemente, the executive vice president of Fox News, said on Monday that it was "downright chilling" that Mr. Rosen "was named a criminal co-conspirator for simply doing his job as a reporter." Bruce Brown, the executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, added on Tuesday that treating "routine news-gathering efforts as evidence of criminality is extremely troubling and corrodes time-honored understandings between the public and the government about the role of the free press." Obama administration officials often talk about the balance between protecting secrets and protecting the constitutional rights of a free press. Accusing a reporter of being a "co-conspirator"... shows a heavy tilt toward secrecy and insufficient concern about a free press. The Washington Post wrote of this: The Rosen affair is as flagrant an assault on civil liberties as anything done by George W. Bush's administration, and it uses technology to silence critics in a way Richard Nixon could only have dreamed of. To treat a reporter as a criminal for doing his job - seeking out information the government doesn't want made public - deprives Americans of the First Amendment freedom on which all other constitutional rights are based. Guns? Privacy? Due process? Equal protection? If you can't speak out, you can't defend those rights, either. Beyond that, the administration's actions shatter the president's credibility and discourage allies who would otherwise defend the administration against bogus accusations such as those involving the Benghazi "talking points." If the administration is spying on reporters and accusing them of criminality just for asking questions - well, who knows what else this crowd is capable of doing? My Post colleague Ann E. Marimow, who broke the Rosen story, obtained the affidavit by FBI agent Reginald Reyes seeking access to Rosen's private e-mails. In the affidavit, Reyes stated that "there is probable cause to believe that the reporter has committed or is committing a violation" of the law against national security leaks. The affidavit detailed how the FBI had monitored Rosen's comings and goings from the State Department and tracked his various phone calls with the suspected leaker, analyst Stephen Jin-Woo Kim. Rosen's supposed crime? Reyes got his evidence from an e-mail from the reporter: "I want to report authoritatively, and ahead of my competitors, on new initiatives or shifts in U.S. policy, events on the ground in , what intelligence is picking up, etc. . . . I'd love to see some internal State Department analyses. . . . In short: Let's break some news, and expose muddle-headed policy when we see it, or force the administration's hand to go in the right direction, if possible." That is indeed compelling evidence - of good journalism. Obama is establishing an ominous precedent. In September 2011, federal agents visited the homes of Brian Harrison, the company's CEO, and Chris Gronet, the company's founder, to examine computer files and documents. Also in September 2011, the U.S. Treasury Department launched an investigation. On September 13, 2011, the Washington Post reported on emails which showed that the Obama administration had tried to rush federal reviewers to approve the loan so Vice President Joe Biden could announce it at a September 2009 groundbreaking for the company's factory. The company was a hallmark of President Obama's plan to support clean energy technologies. The New York Times reported that government auditors and industry analysts had faulted the Obama administration for failing to properly evaluate the company's business proposals, as well as for failing to take note of troubling signs which were already evident. In addition, Frank Rusco, a program director at the Government Accountability Office, had found that the preliminary loan approval had been granted before officials had completed the legally mandated evaluations of the company. The New York Times quoted Shyam Mehta, a senior analyst at GTM Research, as saying "There was just too much misplaced zeal at the Department of Energy for this company." Among 143 companies that had expressed an interest in getting a loan guarantee, Solyndra was the first one to get approval. During the period when Solyndra's loan guarantee was under review, the company had spent nearly $1.8 million on lobbying. Tim Harris, the CEO of Solopower, a different solar panel company which had obtained a $197 million loan guarantee, told the New York Times that his company had never considered spending any money on lobbying, and that "It was made clear to us early in the process that that was clearly verboten... We were told that it was not only not helpful but it was not acceptable." The Washington Post reported that Solyndra had used some of the loan money to purchase new equipment which it never used, and then sold that new equipment, still in its plastic wrap, for pennies on the dollar. Former Solyndra engineer Lindsey Eastburn told the Washington Post, "After we got the loan guarantee, they were just spending money left and right... Because we were doing well, nobody cared. Because of that infusion of money, it made people sloppy." On September 29, 2011, the Washington Post reported that the Obama administration had continued to allow Solyndra to receive taxpayer money even after it had defaulted on its $535 million loan. On October 7, 2011, The Washington Post reported that newly revealed emails showed that Energy Department officials had been warned that their plan to help Solyndra by restructuring the loan might be illegal, and should be cleared with the Justice Department first. However, Energy Department officials moved ahead with the restructuring anyway, with a new deal that would repay company investors before taxpayers if the company were to default. The emails showed concerns within the Obama administration about the legality of the Energy Department's actions. In addition, an Energy Department "stimulus" adviser, Steve Spinner, had pushed for the loan, despite having recused himself because his wife's law firm had done work for the company. In January 2012, CBS News reported that Solyndra had thrown millions of dollars worth of brand new glass tubes into garbage dumpsters, where they ended up being shattered. Solyndra told CBS that it had conducted an exhaustive search for buyers of the glass tubes, and that no one had wanted them. However, CBS discovered that Solyndra had not offered the glass tubes for sale at either one of its two asset auctions that took place in 2011. In addition, David Lucky, a buyer and seller of such equipment, told CBS that he would have bought the tubes if he had had a chance to do so.
