Article has obvious Anti-Russian and Anti-Putin slant, but serves to show that even observers in the US admit that Putin's message at the UN resonated with the General Assembly. By Rob Garver 9/29/15 When you run a heavy-handed government that has systematically beaten down most of the independent domestic press and replaced it with servile government-run news outlets, you expect to see positive headlines after you deliver a major speech. But when Vladimir Putin woke up on Tuesday morning, a day after delivering his first address to the United National General Assembly in 10 years, even he must have been pleasantly surprised by what he read. "Vladimir Putin Steals Barack Obama's Thunder on the World Stage," read one headline. "Obama Has Turned Putin into the World's Most Powerful Leader," read another. "At the U.N., Putin Checkmates Obama on Ukraine, Syria, ISIS," went one more. Now, Putin can presumably order up whatever headline he wants from TASS, Sputnik or Russia Today - all of which are government-controlled and have English-language versions meant to spread the Kremlin's message abroad. What likely surprised him was that the headlines above, and others like them, were from U.S. news outlets. In order, they were published by CNN , the New York Post , and the Washington Examiner . The Russian media outlets, in fact, were relatively restrained compared to some of the U.S. coverage of the clash between Obama and Putin on Monday. The U.S. president spoke harshly about Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its support of Bashar al-Assad, the beleaguered Syrian dictator whom Obama characterized as a murderous despot who must be removed. Putin blamed the U.S. policy of fomenting regime change for the unrest in the Mideast in general and Syria in particular, and said it would be an "enormous mistake" to fail to support Assad who, he said, leads one of the only armies "truly" battling the terror group ISIS. He also announced that in its capacity as current chair of the UN Security Council, Russia would convene a ministerial meeting aimed at creating a new coalition to fight ISIS - this in addition to the announcement that Iran, Iraq, Russia and Syria had all recently announced an intelligence-sharing agreement to coordinate the fight against ISIS. When the dust cleared, many U.S. outlets - particularly those of a conservative bent - adjudged Putin the winner. The Wall Street Journal's editorial page declared that Obama had been "cornered" by Putin and Iran on the Syria question and noted that "Mr. Putin publicly laughs at the feeble U.S. efforts to build a pro-Western anti-Islamic State coalition." Putin's apparent public relations victory on Monday was even more of a success than most in the West realize, because of the way it will play to a Russian audience. When Putin first came to power more than 15 years ago, he set about winning over the Russian people by extracting the Russian Federation from the economic morass left behind by decades of failed Communist rule. He was largely successful, and the Russian people loved him for it. Putin's trouble now is that the Russian economy is under pressure on various fronts. Overly dependent on the sale of oil and natural gas, the Russian economy is faltering because of plummeting energy prices. International sanctions related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula and continued support of armed insurgents in other parts of the country have also taken a toll. The ruble is worth about half of what it was a year and a half ago. Faced with a population experiencing greater and greater economic pain, Putin has made his new mission not to restore Russia's economy but to restore its image in the world. He has, almost explicitly, promised to turn Russia back into a superpower again. The Kremlin's increased military assertiveness, the Crimean invasion and now the presence of Russian troops in Syria combined with Putin's very public effort to take on a leadership role in the Middle East are all part of that effort. In the end, it's not at all clear that Russia has the capacity to project the kind of global power that the former Soviet Union did during the years of the Cold War. The Russian Federation is smaller, poorer and weaker than the Communist empire that eventually crumbled under its own weight at the end of the last century. For Putin though, the issue may not be so much the long-term success of an effort to rebuild Russian global influence but the short-term gain that looking like a major world power again provides him in the domestic political arena. If nothing else, it might buy time to engineer a much-needed economic recovery.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Barack Obama have discussed Syria Crisis, but failed to reach an agreement on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's destiny. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday in a meeting which lasted 90 minutes. A senior US official described the meeting as "business-like back and forth," while Putin called it "constructive and business-likes" and said the discussion was "very constructive and surprisingly open." "In my opinion there is a basis to work on shared problems together," but "disputes remain," Putin told reporters following the meeting. "We have a lot in common," he said, adding "we have sound grounds to work on the points of concern together." The US official said the two leaders decided that conversations between the American and Russian military officials should continue over the crisis in Syria, but added that Obama and Putin "fundamentally disagreed" on the role of Assad in Syria. "I think the Russians certainly understood the importance of there being a political resolution in Syria and there being a process that pursues a political resolution," the official said. However, "we have a difference about what the outcome of that process would be," he added. Before the meeting, both Obama and Putin delivered speeches to the United Nations General Assembly, during which the two leaders expressed completely different views on Assad. Putin said Assad is the only option in campaign against the Daesh (ISIL) terrorists, noting he is "valiantly fighting terrorism face to face." As part of a plan to fight against Daesh Takfiri terrorists, Russia has been beefing up its military presence in Syria, equipping Damascus with advanced military aircraft such as the Mikoyan MiG-31 fighter jets and other sophisticated equipment. Putin has said that Russia's support for the Assad government was in accordance with the UN Charter, since "we have been providing assistance to legitimate government entities only." Moscow's military support for Assad, however, goes against the current US policy, which calls for the Syrian president's ouster. Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. According to reports, the United States and its regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey - have been supporting the militants operating inside Syria since the beginning of the crisis; Press TV reported. - See more at: http://ift.tt/1MWMuaV

Lansing, MI - Logan Square, a bottom-of-the-market shopping center on the southwest side of my auto- making home town, may represent the future of American retail. The anchor tenant is a plasma donation center, where desperate donors puff cigarettes while awaiting their appointments with the needle. Scattered among the boarded-up or dusty-glassed storefronts are a laundromat, a Dollar Tree, a Sav-A-Lot food store, a Rent-A-Center and a tax preparer offering instant refunds for people who need that check now. A poverty pimpin' conglomerate could make a lot of money franchising these PoorMalls to inner-city neighborhoods and small towns gored by globalization. Logan Square, however, developed organically. Throughout the 1990s, it was occupied by a hardware store, a bakery, a barber college, a Kroger's supermarket and a hobby shop. What happened? As author/autoworker Ben Hamper put it in his shoprat memoir " Rivethead ," Michigan "scratches its butt with the jagged peaks of the automotive sales chart." Since Hamper's book came out in 1991, American brands' share of U.S. auto sales has fallen from 70.5 percent to 45 percent . Michigan has suffered most from car buyers' turn away from patriotic consumerism: In the 2000s, remembered here as "The Lost Decade," its per capita income dropped from 18th to 37th and it was the only state to lose people , its industrial disaster proving even more depopulating than the natural disaster in Louisiana. The withering of the American auto industry, to the point where the Big Three - Ford, Chrysler and General Motors - have been downgraded in journalese to the "Detroit Three," is not just a crisis for the Rust Belt. It's bad for the entire country, particularly workers. The United Auto Workers not only founded the modern labor movement, by winning recognition during the Flint Sit-Down Strike of 1936-37, it set the standard for wages up and down the economy. "We used to get stoned in the newspapers every time we'd get something in our contract," said Don Cooper, a retired Lansing autoworker who built the now-defunct Oldsmobile from 1965 to 2002. " 'Well, the autoworkers drove the price up because they got a raise.' But then everybody else would start getting raises after we did." UAW membership has been sliding down the same rocky peak as domestic auto sales. In its prime, in 1979, the union had 1.5 million members. Today, it has 400,000. Now, what once was the nation's flagship union doesn't even set the standard for wages in the auto industry. Those wages are set by foreign automakers who create plants in Southern states to avoid American unions. UAW members now build just over half the cars produced in the United States. As recently as 1999, they built 85 percent . "The continent's Yankee automotive industry was all but destroyed in the 1990s and 2000s in favor of foreign-owned factories in the Deep South and Greater Appalachia, just like the textile and forest products industries before it," Colin Woodward wrote in " American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America ." "Some observers feel that the 'neo-Confederates' will force the other nations to follow their lead, turning the entire federation into a giant 'low-wage export platform' for advanced, highly educated industrial societies in Western Europe and northeast Asia." In 2008, when the chairmen of GM and Chrysler begged Congress for a loan, Southern senators tried to do exactly that. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who represents a Volkswagen and a Nissan plant, attempted to force the UAW to accept "wage parity" with foreign auto plants as a condition of the bailout. His attempt to cut union wages to non-union levels was mooted when President George W. Bush decided that the auto companies were too big to fail, and sent $17.4 billion, enough to keep them afloat for three months. (Corker later intervened in the UAW's unsuccessful attempt to unionize the VW plant in Chattanooga, telling workers a "no" vote would be rewarded with a new SUV line.) Nonetheless, American auto companies have lowered wages to compete with those in Japan, Germany and Italy - the Axis of Automakers. Because it provides pensions and benefits that were standard in a more prosperous era, GM's labor costs average $58 an hour, compared with $48 for Toyota and $38 for Volkswagen. As a result, the UAW agreed in 2007 to a two-tier wage system, in which new hires earned $14 an hour, less than half the $28.50 paid to longtime autoworkers. (The new contract agreed on this month by the UAW and Chrysler aims to close that gap, although many autoworkers are rejecting it .) Admittedly, the Detroit Three alienated a lot of drivers in the '70s and '80s, when the Arab oil embargo created a brand-new market for fuel-efficient cars. Ford, GM and Chrysler didn't want to build those vehicles - in part because they didn't generate enough profits to pay union wages and benefits - so they produced some of the junkiest clown cars ever to blow a head gasket on an American freeway: the Chevette, the Nova, the Volare, the Escort. Today's generation of car buyers has forgotten Pearl Harbor but remembers the Ford Pinto, so has no problem buying Japanese. In the '90s, Toyota beat Detroit into the hybrid market with the Prius. Unionism and environmentalism are both progressive values, but when the two conflict in a car lot, coastal liberals usually choose the latter. This preference for foreign nameplates persists even though American cars have caught up in terms of fuel efficiency and quality. The Chevrolet Volt, an electric car with a backup gasoline engine, and the Ford Fusion, which has a hybrid option, were back-to-back Motor Trend Cars of the Year . The American auto industry's decline has invited an assault on labor throughout the Midwest. In 2012, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed a right-to-work law that would allow workers in union shops to stop paying dues. Conservative activists acknowledged that the law never would have passed in the UAW's heyday, but a 400,000-member union is a lot less frightening to a Republican governor than a 1.5 million-member union. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), who has built a political identity as a union slayer, made Wisconsin the 25th right-to-work state in March. Walker rails against "the power of union bosses," but he's not attacking unions because they're powerful. He's attacking them because they're weak. The year before he was elected governor, the GM plant in Janesville, which once had employed 7,000 autoworkers, built its last Chevy Tahoe. If I know Madison, plenty of people drove to the protests against Walker's union busting in Toyotas and Volkswagens. It matters to all of us what happens to a Midwestern factory town. Although the nation's cultural and intellectual trends derive from the East and West coasts, its economic trends begin in the Midwest. The housing crisis that blew up into the Great Recession got its start in Cleveland . Carl Crow, a Buick historian, declared in 1945 that "America is a thousand Flints." He meant that the entire nation was about to enjoy the prosperity of an automaking city. Today, with its automotive workforce down to 6,000, less than a tenth of its 1970s prime, Flint has the highest homicide rate in the nation, and an average home sale price of $15,000. Writes Andrew R. Highsmith in his new book " Demolition Means Progress: Flint, Michigan, and the Fate of the American Metropolis ," "Like their postwar predecessors in the growth-hungry states of the South and West, the Vehicle City's twenty-first century boosters aggressively publicized Flint's probusiness economic climate, pointing to the city's two-tier wage structure, low taxes, severely weakened unions, surplus labor and company town heritage." Sen. Corker, you win. http://ift.tt/1FDlGKl

Genius Burglar Sticks Finger In Camera's Lens

By: jironde on: 8:54 AM
This ought to cause a few hundred more liberals to fling themselves off bridges and buildings in anxiety-fueled disgust. I say, let it rain. ================================================== I never thought Donald Trump would run for president. If he did run, I didn't think he would gain any support, and if he did gain any support, I didn't think it would last. I thought all polls would show him being crushed by Hillary Clinton. Fall is upon us, and Trump is leading in Iowa, leading in New Hampshire, leading all Republicans nationally. He has roughly double the combined support of Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio. In a general election match up against Hillary Clinton, he's only 2.8 points behind, according to a RealClearPolitics polling average late last week, and doing about the same as Bush and Rubio. I don't have much skull left in the spot where I've been scratching my head because, as a conservative, I fail to see how Trump is anything but a flaming liberal compared to Bush, Rubio and every other Republican candidate. As a patriot, I'm shocked that Trump got away with slandering John McCain for his Vietnam ordeal. As a person who has a face, I can't believe he stooped to attacking Carly Fiorina's. So this time I'll try something different: imagining what it's like to be a Trump supporter. What's the appeal? I think I can answer in one word: Stones. Cojones. His buildings aren't the only things he owns that are thickly layered in brass (and, probably, emblazoned with the Trump logo.) There seems to be a large contingent of Americans who aren't particularly interested in Trump's vague policy prescriptions. Try to get Donald to talk specifics and you get a level of analysis much like that of Ox, whose senseless history report in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" drew raucous applause by devolving into micro-tribalism: "Everything is different, but the same...things are more moderner than before...bigger, and yet smaller...it's computers...San Dimas High School football rules!" Substitute in "American industry rules!" and you've more or less got a Trump "speech," or rather riff, since he keeps winging it. Here is how the man responded to a question about God. "Well, I say God is the ultimate. You know, you look at this? Here we are on the Pacific Ocean. How did I ever own this? I bought it 15 years ago. I made one of the great deals, they say, ever. I have no more mortgage on it, as I will certify and represent to you. And I was able to buy this and make a great deal. That's what I want to do for the country: Make great deals. We have to, we have to bring it back. But God is the ultimate." Trump supporters frequently mention that they love his political incorrectness. Trump says things you just can't say anymore. No. 1 on that list has to do with immigration. Even to hint that mass legalization of illegal immigrants will encourage more lawbreakers, while exerting downward pressure on the wages and job opportunities of working-class Americans, is labeled xenophobia or worse. Trump isn't afraid to say this, and say it loudly. But Trump isn't a single-issue candidate. Immigration, trade, health care - they're all part of an overall vision of America. America today is sagging, flaccid, impotent. He's got just what it takes to make America stand up straight and tall. Can this be accomplished by wearing a truck-stop foam baseball cap that says "Make America Great Again"? I have my doubts. But he's the only candidate on either side of the aisle who even seems to care about American greatness. Seventy-two percent of Americans think the country isn't as great as it once was, and the other candidates all seem to be chatting in the bar car as the national choo-choo slides off the rails and heads for the canyon. Only one man is screaming and waving his arms. Trump's complete lack of preparation for our highest office isn't registering to his supporters: Every moment that looks clownish to someone versed in policy looks refreshingly unscripted to Trump fans. It isn't the details that they want to hear about, it's the attitude - aggressive, confident, tough, bold. He screams leader, not wonk. Next to Jeb Bush, who actually has political experience, conservative principles and specific policy solutions, all of which the Donald lacks, Trump looks like the varsity quarterback giving a noogie to the debate-club nerd. You can't begin to fix the problem until you admit that there is a problem, and what looks like grandstanding and content-free demagoguery to me looks to many citizens like an urgently needed passion. The average American feels that the country has a sucking chest wound and everybody but Dr. Trump is telling him to treat it with a couple of aspirin.

Leader of German Iraq mission dies suddenly The commander of Germany's mission to train Kurdish troops in northern Iraq died suddenly on Wednesday, the Bundeswehr (German army) said. Soldiers found Colonel Stephan Sp"ottel, 56, dead in his room at the "Cristal" hotel in the Kurdish capital city Erbil. Colonel Stephan Spoettel was found dead at 8:50 a.m. local time (1:50 a.m. ET) in the Cristal Erbil Hotel in the northern Kurdish city of Irbil, the German armed forces said in a statement. Spoettel was the head of the coalition's German training contingent in northern Iraq. There was no information to suggest suicide or "third-party involvement," the statement added. Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S. name for the coalition fighting the extremists across Iraq and Syria, said in a statement that a member of the coalition had died in Irbil on Wednesday, without providing further details. "This incident is under investigation and further information will be released as appropriate," the statement added. "We are currently proceeding on the assumption that he died of natural causes," a spokesman for the Bundeswehr headquarters in Iraq said on Wednesday. Sp"ottel's next of kin have been informed and his deputy, Lieutenant-Colonel Jan Heymann, has taken over command of the mission, a Bundeswehr press release said. The party of "fiscal responsibility"... Smfh Permanently defunding Planned Parenthood would end up increasing government spending by $130 million over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The CBO, Congress's nonpartisan scorekeeper, projects that defunding Planned Parenthood would actually end up increasing government spending, because it would result in more unplanned births as women lost access to services such as contraception. Medicaid would have to pay for some of those births, and some of the children themselves would then end up qualifying for Medicaid and other government programs. So while CBO estimates that cutting off federal funds to Planned Parenthood would reduce spending by $520 million 10 ten years, it would also increase spending by $650 million over that period. The net effect is an increase in spending of $130 million. The estimates come as a debate rages over defunding the organization. Recent Republican proposals have focused on cutting off funding for just one year, though. Such a bill passed the House last week, and Senate Republicans released such a government funding bill on Tuesday, though it is expected to fail in a vote on Thursday. The CBO previously estimated that cutting off funding for just one year would reduce spending by $235 million. It similarly found that a one-year defunding would result in more unplanned births but not enough to increase government spending. The CBO notes in its new estimate that its projections are "highly uncertain." It says that as little as 5 percent or as many as 25 percent of Planned Parenthood's 2.6 million patients could face reduced access to care if Planned Parenthood were defunded. People in geographic areas without access to other clinics would be hardest hit, it finds. It also estimates there would be "several thousand" more births per year, though the number would decline over time as people found other healthcare providers. The CBO estimates that Planned Parenthood gets about $450 million annually in federal funds, with $390 million coming from Medicaid payments and $60 million coming from family planning grants. The CBO factored into its analysis proposals to redistribute Planned Parenthood's funds to other health providers and therefore estimates there would be no savings from cutting off the $60 million in grants because that money would be redirected to the other providers.

Milk depletes the calcium from your bones The milk myth has spread around the world based on the flawed belief that this protein and calcium-rich drink is essential to support good overall health and bone health in particular at any age. It is easy to understand that the confusion about milk's imaginary benefits stems from the fact that it contains calcium - around 300 mg per cup. But many scientific studies have shown an assortment of detrimental health effects directly linked to milk consumption. And the most surprising link is that not only do we barely absorb the calcium in cow's milk (especially if pasteurized), but to make matters worse, it actually increases calcium loss from the bones. What an irony this is! Here's how it happens. Like all animal protein, milk acidifies the body pH which in turn triggers a biological correction. You see, calcium is an excellent acid neutralizer and the biggest storage of calcium in the body is - you guessed it... in the bones. So the very same calcium that our bones need to stay strong is utilized to neutralize the acidifying effect of milk. Once calcium is pulled out of the bones, it leaves the body via the urine, so that the surprising net result after this is an actual calcium deficit. Knowing this, you'll understand why statistics show that countries with the lowest consumption of dairy products also have the lowest fracture incidence in their population (there's more on this later). But the sad truth is that most mainstream health practitioners ignore these proven facts. I know it firsthand because when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis, my doctor recommended that I drink lots of milk in addition to taking Fosamax. Fortunately, I did neither, because I knew that... Cow's milk is custom-designed for calves Thanks to our creative ingenuity and perhaps related to our ancient survival needs, we adopted the dubious habit of drinking another species' milk. Nobody can dispute that cow's milk is an excellent food source for calves. Weighing around 100 pounds at birth, a calf typically gains approximately eight times its weight by the time it is weaned. But unlike humans, once calves are weaned, they never drink milk again. And the same applies to every mammalian species on this planet. Also, each mammalian species has its own "designer" milk, and cow's milk is no exception. For example, cow's milk contains on average three times the amount of protein than human milk which creates metabolic disturbances in humans that have detrimental bone health consequences. It's important to bear in mind that mother's milk is excellent nourishment for human babies, but its composition is very different from cow's milk. Scientific studies show that milk increases fracture risk Many scientific studies contradict the conventional wisdom that milk and dairy consumption help reduce osteoporotic fractures. Surprisingly, studies demonstrating that milk and dairy products actually fail to protect bones from fractures outnumber studies that prove otherwise. Even drinking milk from a young age does not protect against future fracture risk but actually increases it. Shattering the "savings account" calcium theory, Cumming and Klineberg report their study findings as follows: "Consumption of dairy products, particularly at age 20 years, was associated with an increased risk of hip fracture in old age. ("Case-Control Study of Risk Factors for Hip Fractures in the Elderly". American Journal of Epidemiology. Vol. 139, No. 5, 1994).

Colombia'president and Farc's top rebel commander have shaken hands signaling a breakthrough in nearly three years of peace talks. President Juan Manuel Santos and Rodrigo Londono better known as 'Timochenko' reached a justice deal which incorporates the setting up special courts to try crimes committed during five decades of bloodshed. A truth commission and amnesty law are to be created. 'We won't fail': Colombian President & FARC rebels agree to end decades-long war in 6 months http://t.co/4I6kwhPZyB http://pic.twitter.com/efk5sUCDzT- RT (@RT_com) September 24, 2015 After making that historic handshake President Santos promised that in exactly six months there will be a definitive goodbye to the last and longest war in Colombia, "and not only Colombia but all America". The deal is the last significant obstacle to ending the bloodshed in which 220,000 people have died and millions have been displaced. 'Timochenko' said he was happy that the special jurisdiction for peace was designed for everyone involved in the conflict, combatants and noncombatants , and not only for just one side. The Farc grew out of a 1960s Marxist-inspired peasant movement demanding land reform and has been fighting successive governments ever since. Peace talks facilitated by Cuba began nearly three years ago but the slowness of progress and then a deadly rebel attack which left 11 soldiers dead in April, led to a recent escalation of hostilities that had threatened to derail the whole process. The Farc insurgent group - of about 8,000 combatants, down from 17,000 in their heyday - is considered a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union.

Many media pundits claim the current European migrant crisis is due to conflict in the Middle East. Yet, there have been many recent Middle Eastern conflicts, yet none have created the flood of migrants on a level not seen in Europe since World War II. Conflicts only define who is coming not why they come to the heart of Europe. Conflict is not the reason why the migrants cross many safe countries refusing to seek refuge in each safe haven they pass through. The first video below from April 29 2015 shows the reason to be a change in EU policy. This change implicitly redefined a refugee as " anyone fleeing from poverty for a better life ". Why the migrant crisis is happening Why the EU relocation of migrants cannot solve the crisis This beautifully simple demonstration will quickly show why the chosen EU solution cannot work. It will fail. The solution that has been proven effective is that used by Australia

http://ift.tt/1gGQD4n by Thierry Meyssan The intervention of the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organisation) against terrorism in Iraq and Syria may be the beginning of a world order based on the cooperation and defence of civilian populations, or, on the contrary, a period of East-West confrontation in which the West openly supports terrorism. Contrary to popular belief, this military deployment is aimed less at defending Iraq and the Syrian Arab Republic than the members of the CSTO themselves. It is therefore not negotiable. The debates in the UNO General Assembly and Security Council on the 30th September will reveal the response of Washington and its allies. In any case, nothing will ever be the same. While the Western Press persists in discussing possible Russian military support for President Bachar el-Assad, the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) has decided to fight terrorism in Iraq and Syria. It would seem that the Western powers still fail to understand the consequences of their policies. An existential question for the CSTO Let's remember that the CSTO is a classic military alliance between six ex-members of the Soviet Union - Belarus, Russia, Armenia, Tadjikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kirghizistan. Unlike NATO and the Warsaw Pact, in which the member states lost their sovereignty - for the benefit of the United States and the United Kingdom in NATO, and the USSR in the Warsaw Pact, which constitute violations of the United Nations Charter - the member states of the CSTO retain full sovereignty, do not place their armies under the command of the alliance's most powerful member, and can quit the alliance at any moment . Azerba"idjan, Georgia and Uzbekistan have already freely left this organisation and turned to Guam and NATO. Since the 1980's - before the member states of the CSTO even existed - the United States and NATO have deployed a missile system which was first of all aimed at the USSR, and now encircles the CSTO. These missiles, which were supposed to destroy enemy intercontinental missiles during their launching phase, can only in fact destroy slow-moving aircraft, and can have no effect on Russian missiles, which are supersonic. Presented by the Pentagon as a defensive weapon - which perhaps it may originally have been - this << anti-missile shield >> can therefore only have offensive potential. The CSTO is the only group of states in the world which is threatened by missiles which are pointed directly at it from its frontiers. Since the Second World War, the USSR, and later the member states of the CSTO, have watched the recruitment of the Muslim Brotherhood by the CIA, and the use of certain of their members or ex-members by the USA in order to destabilise them . So Osama Ben Laden's men (trained by Sayyid Qutb's brother) and those of Ayman al-Zaouahiri (who had joined the Brotherhood one year before the arrest and execution of Sayyid Qutb) fought the USSR in Afghanistan, and then fought Russia in Yugoslavia and finally on their own territory in the Caucasus . Since 2011, the member states of the CSTO have observed the NATO operation known as the << Arab Spring >>, which was designed to overthrow enemy r'egimes and also friendly r'egimes in the Middle East for the benefit of the Muslim Brotherhood (Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria), and since 2014, they have watched the triumph of the Muslim Brotherhood's ideal with the proclamation of a caliphate which challenges both international law and human rights. Currently, this caliphate has awarded its command positions mostly to Islamists from the ex-USSR, sometimes even from the member states of the CSTO. On the 1st August, Ukraine and NATO member Turkey announced the creation of an << International Islamist Brigade >> composed of Al-Qa"ida and Daesh combatants, and stationed in Kherson (Ukraine) . This Brigade proposes to fight Russia in Crimea. In other words, unless they now engage against terrorism, the CSTO will soon have to confront both an exterior enemy - NATO and its missiles - and an interior enemy - Islamists who were initially trained by NATO. The six heads of state and the CSTO's General Secretary at the CSTO meeting in Dushanbe On the 15th September, the CSTO held its annual meeting for its heads of state in Dushanbe (Tadjikistan). As I announced a month ago , Russian President Vladimir Putin presented to his colleagues the studies realised by the Russian army concerning the possibility of fighting the caliphate immediately, before they enter CSTO territory en masse. President Putin had previously managed to convince his partners that he would not engage them to support Russia's ambitions in Syria, but to respond to a threat directly aimed at the CSTO. Finally, the CSTO decided to deploy in Iraq and Syria in order to fight all jihadists, whether they claimed to support Daesh or al-Qa"ida. This operation is legal according to international law, since it conforms to UN Security Council resolutions relative to the fight against terrorism. It is also an extension of the operation by the US-led Coalition, also legal, against Daesh. However, unlike the Coalition, the CSTO maintains positive relations with the governments of Iraq and Syria, which enables it to envisage far greater efficiency. In order to prepare the CSTO intervention, an air corridor was set up between the Organisation and Syria. It was at first intended to cross the Balkans, but US allies opposed it, with the exception of Greece. The corridor was therefore set up to cross Iran and Iraq. Within less than a week, massive quantities of armement and more than 2,000 men were transported to Syria. Technically speaking, the CSTO has the capacity to deploy up to 50,000 men in less than two weeks. The United Nations forum For the sake of efficiency, and without prejudice about the good or bad faith of the Western powers, CSTO heads of state plan to speak before the UN General Assembly- as from the 28th September - to call on the international community to unite its efforts against terrorism. Apart from this, since Russia is presiding over the Security Council for the month of September, Vladimir Putin - who has not been to the UNO for a decade - will preside over the session on the 30th September, which will be dedicated to the fight against terrorism in Iraq and Syria. In the event that the Coalition and the CSTO should come to an agreement, they could either participate in joint operations or share the work between them - Iraq for the Coalition and Syria for the CSTO. Otherwise, the two organisations could lead two distinct campaigns while trying to avoid getting in each other's way. From the Atlantist point of view, the CSTO campaign will benefit the Syrian Arab Republic and guarantee the continuation of the mandate of elected President Bachar el-Assad, whom NATO hoped to overthrow. However, it is false to pretend that this intervention was conceived to save Syria from the West. Indeed, during the preparation of the Geneva Conference in June 2012, President Putin had considered deploying the CSTO as a peace force . General Hassan Tourekmani, who was at that time President of the Syrian National Security Council, had undertaken several approaches to make this possible. But the deployment did not happen, partly because the Organisation had not yet signed an agreement with the UNO , and partly because two members of the CSTO did not feel directly threatened by the situation in Syria. From the point of view of the CSTO, their proposition to the Western powers will oblige them to clarify their policies. Indeed, until the signing of the agreement between Washington and Teheran, on the 14th July, the anti-Daesh Coalition, far from fighting terrorism, had regularly and massively parachuted arms to the jihadists. However, during the last few weeks, the Coalition has indeed been fighting Daesh. At the end of July, in coordination with the Syrian Arab Army and its militia - the Kurdish PYG and the Syrian Military Council - it launched a massive bombing operation in defence of Al-Hasakah. This operation, which the Coalition did not publicise, eliminated about 3,000 jihadists. Besides this, the White House has already indicated that it is open to << tactical and practical discussions with Russia >>. The Foreign Office has declared that it is no longer opposed to the fact that << the Syrian President may remain in power for a period of transition if that could further the resolution of the conflict >>. Joining this movement, the French Minister for Foreign Affairs suggested that he would agree to allow President el-Assad to complete the mandate that his people had confided in him, declaring : << Must we tell the Syrian people that Mr. Bachar al-Assad will hold on to executive power for the next fifteen years ? If we say that, no solution is possible. Between saying that and demanding the immediate departure of Mr. Bachar al-Assad, there is a margin. It is known as diplomacy. >> . Thierry Meyssan announces the intervention by the CSTO on Syrian television Consequences of the CSTO intervention Contrary to a false idea widely spread by the Atlantist Press, the fight against terrorism in Iraq and Syria is not the affair of decades, but a few months, as long as all states cease their secret support for the jihadists. In the case of a disagreement at the UN, the Western Press will probably vilify the CSTO action by overplaying civilian casualties. Indeed, despite all precautions, it is not possible to bomb the terrorists without causing << collateral damage. >> Every Islamist leader has three << wives >> and, following their example, more and more jihadists have taken prisoners whom they reduce to slavery and then << marry >>. However, if an agreement is reached, we will probably never hear about these victims, and the war in Syria should be over by the Orthodox Christmas, even though it will take a good year before the situation is completely stabilised over all the territory. Keep in mind : - The CSTO will intervene as from October 2015, both in Iraq and Syria, against individuals described as << terrorists >> by the UNO, in other words al-Qa"ida, Daesh, and all the groups allied with them. - The CSTO are not trying to come to the aid of Ha"ider al-Abadi or Bachar el-Assad, but is being directly threatened by the jihadists. - The jihadists do not have the capacity to resist for very long against an international alliance if Iraq and Syria are included. - The United States, who have already waged a huge secret joint operation with the Syrian Arab Army in Al-Hasakah, are ready to conclude an agreement with the CSTO. Their British and French allies are ready to renounce the idea of overthrowing the Syrian Arab Republic.

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi underlined Iran's determination to fight against the arrogant powers, and said the terrorist groups in the region are the fingertips of the world powers and Iran will stand against them."They are reactionary people and want to return to the era of the presidency of crazy Bush. Bush made his utmost efforts to attack Iran but he couldn't," Firouzabadi told reporters on the sidelines of the annual nationwide parades at the mausoleum of the Founder of the Islamic Republic, the Late Imam Khomeini, South of Tehran on Tuesday morning. Stressing that Republicans' attempts to continue the path of Bush to trigger war against Iran are futile too, he said, "War will also fail to produce any result for them because Republicans are only chanting empty words and slogans." Firouzabadi, meantime, underlined Iran's determination to fight against the arrogant powers, and said the terrorist groups in the region are the fingertips of the world powers and Iran will stand against them too. "All the regional countries should know that the US, Israel and Britain are supporting the terrorists," he added. In relevant remarks in August, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi expressed confidence about the imminent defeat of ISIL and other terrorist groups, and said they will have no place in future developments in the region. Also, in February, Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Commander Major General Qassem Soleimani underlined that the terrorist groups in the region, specially the ISIL, are experiencing the last days of their lives. "Given the heavy failures that the ISIL and other terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria have sustained, we are sure that these groups are nearing the end of their life," Soleimani said. He said that persuading and organizing the Takfiri streams to impair the face of Islam and creating sedition and civil war among Muslims is the last weapon used by the arrogant powers. Also, in October, General Soleimani underlined that the US moves in the region and the terrorist attacks by the ISIL would end in failure. "I believe that both the US moves and the terrorist acts of the ISIL are doomed to failure because they are not in quest for truth," General Soleimani told reporters in Tehran. "Their solution will not lead to victory; we have all witnessed in Syria that the measures they adopted did not produce any fruit (for them)," he added. General Soleimani underlined that the victories gained by Islam and the Islamic Republic of Iran had all been the result of their real quest for truth. FNA reported.

Firouzabadi: Republicans' Attempts to Continue the Path of Crazy Bush is Futile

CHICAGO - After watching for years as their city's financial troubles piled up, Chicago homeowners will be told this week that it's time for them to start paying the tab. Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to propose a $543 million property tax increase on Tuesday to help eliminate pension debt, along with a schools tax for construction, according to details released late Monday by the administration. Residents will also face more taxes and fees on garbage collection, ride-sharing services and e-cigarettes, all with the goal of easing a budget hole and repairing low credit ratings. The steps would help reverse the city's financial slide but could dent Chicago's reputation for a relatively affordable cost of living. Median home prices in the nation's two larger cities, New York and Los Angeles, are double Chicago's. "There's no way around it," said Alderman George Cardenas of the additional taxes. "If we don't face the consequences, you pay more (later), your children will pay more and that's no way to run a city." It's unclear how residents and businesses will respond. Emanuel has faced raucous crowds at public budget hearings, but the political fallout for the former chief of staff to President Barack Obama could be delayed because he doesn't face re-election until 2019. Some homeowners, landlords and business owners complain they already pay more than other cities in gasoline prices, sales taxes and parking. Chicago's sales tax rate is 10.25 percent, the nation's highest. "Paying for picking up garbage? That's ridiculous. That's what my taxes are for," said homeowner James Young, 48, who works for a textile company. "Your pay check doesn't increase every time the taxes increase." However, there have been few signs the proposal would fail in the City Council, which has largely been a rubber stamp for the mayor. Chicago's property tax rates rank 12th nationwide, higher than Los Angeles and New York, but higher property values in those cities mean property owners pay thousands more a year, according to a Lincoln Institute of Land Policy study. Laurence Msall, executive director of the Civic Federation, a tax and policy research organization, said the key will be persuading Chicago residents that the additional revenue will be used correctly. "One of the biggest problems is not the tax increase but the reaction to the tax increase," Msall said. "If people don't think we're going to solve things, they will leave." The city's financial problems have been mounting because of inadequate contributions to the pension system and questionable borrowing, mostly under former Mayor Richard M. Daley. Chicago has the worst-funded public pension system of any major American city and a budget shortfall of at least $750 million. Illinois' governor, Republican Bruce Rauner, has even suggested that the city school district - which credit rating agencies have rated at "junk" status - declare bankruptcy. Emanuel has cut government costs and sought other ways to raise revenues, such as a bringing casino gambling to the city, but without success. Emanuel's office announced ahead of Tuesday's budget speech that the property tax will be phased in through 2019 and put toward police and fire pensions. Emanuel's aides estimated that it would cost a resident with a $250,000 home roughly $540 more a year. Chicago saw property taxes rise in 2008, but the last major increase was in 1987. Emanuel also plans to ask council members to approve a $45 million tax for Chicago Public Schools, along with a $9.50 per-dwelling garbage collection fee, higher costs for ride-sharing services and taxis, and a tax for e-cigarette liquid. The revenue push comes as Emanuel attempts to strike a softer image, conceding during his re-election campaign earlier this year that his bullish style turned off some people. The mayor dropped hints that he'll seek property tax exemptions for low income and elderly residents. But state approval is needed for the tax hike and exemptions. "We are going to address our challenges, and I think when the governor looks at the whole budget he will see that we didn't leave any stone unturned," Emanuel said. "It is fair, it is equitable. It's progressive."

Roosevelt in his illegal third term which was won by saying he kept us out of ww2 and will keep it that way, declares that the "secret" German New world order will fail. Now today our Politicians openly say they have bult a NWO. Much like when we blame Assad for the refugee crisis and use dead babies as open border Propoganda. Assad rightly says "the west cries for them with one eye while aiming gun with the other" Then we say we will invade Syria to fight isis (the terrorist John McCain was caught on camera arming and calling "heroes"), this all for a grand scheme of a underhanded attack and regime change that was denounced by 90 percent of the Us population a few years ago.. Hundreds of US soldiers even posted online saying they will disobey illegal orders and not go to fight for terrorists vs Syria. Or when we blamed Sadaam for non exhistent WmDS while we and israel have stockpiles. Or when we blame iran for having nukes for the last 40 years. you get the picture,,

Not Much Hope For John Cantlie Freedom Every effort to secure the release of John Cantlie British Reporter seems to fail. John Cantlie who is being held by Islamic State seems to keep having his chances of release push back ,due to the British Government's arrests of Islamic radicals like Anjem Choudary and other Radicals while deals were being done behind the scene. First hurdle was the new laws passed by the Government on paying money for the release of hostages stopping third parties paying for john cantlies release.then a number of arrests of British radicals. The media themselves have claimed they are nervous about the situation but still plaster anti Islamic and anti Palestinian stories or non reporting about the war crimes committed by Israel on Palestinian civilians . Having been a victim of the mass Jewish media myself im still not giving up in trying to secure the release of prisoners on both sides including john cantlie as well as Sheikh Omar Bakri in Lebanese prison. Sheikh Omar Bakri who has been tortured in Jail is one person I personally know in my past work in the subject of terrorism who would fully support the release of John Cantlie even if in past some of his photos as a war photographer were used in anti Al-qaeda or Islamic State stories. I myself worked in anti terrorism circles against Al-qaeda and Islamic State in both the media and for military intelligence officers of a number of countries. It was the pressure of media controlled by Jewish owners that i fell out. as anyone who is a real expert knows there are two sides to every story . I was asked by a news desk for a pro Israeli story a few years ago while Israel was bombing Gaza which there was none as the media knew as Israel was bombing indecent civilians and children and even someone who worked for 10 years for the Sri Lankan Secret service http://ift.tt/1KqrQMM during the worst modern day civil war in modern history knew this was so vile the action of Israel over Christmas that i decided to give the Sun Newspaper Jewish owned the story they wanted via a news agency. It was British Jews are a terror Target because of the actions of Isreal.Within days everyone knew the story was false but I never told the public till a few months later why. I went on BBC Radio and explain my reasons that the actions of Israel were disgusting in the way they killed Palestinian civilians and children and Jews now knew what palestinians felt like daily living in fear daily.the story was removed by the BBC web site. the media hated the false story but if they will not print the truth about the murder of Muslim Civilians ever by Israel because Jews own the media in the UK you sometimes have to make a story up to get the truth out . The news of my reason for the Fake story gave me some respect which has led to friendship between myself and Sheikh Omar Bakri and my conversion to Islam which is not fake like i told some cannot be as im still practicing and learning it teaches me morals and respect kindness.I asked sheikh Omar Bakri for the release of a British Hostage peter moore he was swapped in a prisoner exchange via a deal i set up with Sheikh Omar Bakri who arranged everything the British media has never credited myself or Omar Bakri as we are the wrong colour and faith. http://ift.tt/1L0zQaO It's hard to negotiate the freedom of prisoners on both sides will the government is in the pocket of the jewish media and threatens arrest of myself and others if we do deals with Islamic State.John Cantlie is someone abandoned by his newspapers and his government and should like sheikh omar bakri be released. but its hard to do any legal deals well british government politicians keep shouting their mouths off and selling weapons to Israel and the media refuse to print any stories on the mass murder of palestinian civilians. There are people in the UK who can secure the release of John Cantlie I appeal to them to follow the teachings of clerics like Sheikh Omar Bakri on prisoner exchange and release and ignore the British media and Government and Government controlled muslims whose appeals led to the death of other hostages like allen heming as you are aware and im that Al-qaeda and Islamic State are not going to listen to government funded muslim groups at all. If you have ever worked in wars you sometimes think about peace and the stopping of killing civilians and even your enemies,if you cannot respect your enemy why will they ever listen to you. there are plenty of references in the books of jihaad to freeing prisoners. there is no reason in the way the British Government and media are abandoning a British Hostage and supporting the torture of Sheikh Omar Bakri in Lebanon jail. Deals will see prisoners free... written by Glen Jenvey/Omar Hamza Jenvey for

Sometime very soon, combat aircraft may be zapping threats out of the sky with laser weapons. "I believe we'll have a directed energy pod we can put on a fighter plane very soon," Air Force General Hawk Carlisle said at this week's Air Force Association Air & Space conference in a presentation on what he called Fifth-Generation Warfare. "That day is a lot closer than I think a lot of people think it is." DARPA laser research boosts airborne death rays, tiny laser scanners LADAR-on-a-chip could bring 3D optic scanning to robots, drones, cars; HELLADS makes things go boom. Some low-power laser weapons were on display in mock-up on the exposition floor of the conference, including a system from General Atomics that could be mounted on unmanned aircraft such as the Predator and Reaper drones flown by the Air Force. But the Air Force is looking for something akin to a laser cannon for fighter aircraft, more powerful systems that could be mounted on fighters and other manned Air Force planes within the next five years, Air Force leaders said. Directed-energy weapons pods could be affixed to aircraft to destroy or disable incoming missiles, drones, and even enemy aircraft at a much lower "cost per shot" than missiles or even guns, Carlisle suggested. The Air Force isn't alone in seeking directed energy weapons. The US Navy has already deployed a laser weapon at sea aboard the USS Ponce, capable of a range of attacks against small boats, drones, and light aircraft posing a threat-either by blinding their sensors or operators or heating elements to make them fail or explode. Other laser weapons are also being tested by the Office of Naval Research for use on helicopters to protect against man-portable antiaircraft missiles. (And there's a railgun, but that's not really a directed-energy weapon, and it's too massive to be mounted on an aircraft). The Air Force has been focused on a 150-plus kilowatt system under development by General Atomics in conjunction with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, called HELLADS. That system is now moving into ground-based testing. But based on the results so far, the Air Force leadership clearly believes that HELLADS has come far enough that it could result in a field-ready weapons system by 2020. Even a stepped-down 100 kilowatt system could be capable of damaging or destroying aircraft and ground targets as well as missiles and drones. NEW YORK By Jonathan Stempel A Manhattan federal judge on Friday dismissed former Ukrainian prime minister and presidential candidate Yulia Tymoshenko's civil lawsuit accusing her political opponents of running a U.S.-based racketeering enterprise that led to her imprisonment. U.S.District Judge Kimba Wood said Tymoshenko failed to show that the industrialist Dmytro Firtash and other defendants laundered money in the United States to help pay Ukraine prosecutors and supporters of Viktor Yanukovych, who in 2010 narrowly defeated Tymoshenko to become Ukraine's president. Tymoshenko and two other plaintiffs claimed that Firtash, who owns Ukrainian energy company RosUkrEnergo, and his accomplices "skimmed" millions of dollars from natural gas contracts, and laundered them through bogus Manhattan real estate transactions. She said the campaign was payback for her 2009 agreement with Russia's then-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to eliminate RosUkrEnergo as an intermediary in the sale of natural gas between their respective countries.Wood, however, said that "without specifying the particular contribution of each defendant to the money laundering scheme, plaintiffs fail to establish the requisite directness of relationship between each defendant's conduct and the harm suffered by Tymoshenko." The judge dismissed the complaint, which had been amended three times, with prejudice, meaning it cannot be brought again. Tymoshenko had sought unspecified triple and punitive damages, including for harm to her reputation. Her lawyer Kenneth McCallion was not immediately available for comment. A lawyer for most of the defendants had no immediate comment. A polarizing figure at home, Tymoshenko, 54, was convicted in October 2011 and sentenced to seven years in prison for abusing her power in connection with the 2009 gas transaction. Tymoshenko was freed in February 2014, when Yanukovych was being ousted as president. Firtash was indicted in June 2013 by an Illinois federal grand jury over an alleged scheme to pay $18.5 million of bribes to Indian officials to allow the mining of titanium minerals. On April 30, an Austrian judge rejected a U.S. request to extradite Firtash, who claimed the charges were politically motivated. The case is Tymoshenko et al v. Firtash et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-02794. (Reporting by Jonathan Stempel in New York; Editing by Chris Reese ) Source: Reuters

Ex-Ukraine PM Tymoshenko's U.S. racketeering lawsuit dismissed

Have you noticed that most of the "Syrian refugees" are all terrorist aged Muslim men with kids? What happened to "the womens"? This smacks of an invasion by Jihadis BIG time. Being the case, NONE of them should be let in to ANY country until they watch about a year's worth of videos by Christian Prince, the author of "The Deception of Allah". AFTER a year of watching not only HIS videos on YouTube, but, the videos of "Jesus or Muhammad" featuring Sam Shamoun and David Wood, theses Muslim invaders need to take a quiz where if they just miss ONE, they will stay ANOTHER year in a detention camp watching those YouTube videos, only. Here is one possible quiz question, "According to Muhammad in sahih hadith, an embryo becomes a blood clot in spite of how Muslims want to believe it (i.e. a "clinging leech like substance). HOW many days, according to Muhammad, is an embryo a "clot of congealed blood"? Is it A. 30 days, B. 40 days, C. 9 Months or D. 10 days?" (the answer would be FORTY days). Another question could be, "According to the Quran, stars are located in A. Space. B. the butt of the flying donkey like creature Muhammad said he flew on in a "journey by night". C. on the back of a giant fish. D. in the earth's atmosphere to attack Satan if he tries to spy on Allah?" (It's D of course). Another question could be, "What book does the Quran say is not only "Allah's words" and "Allah's books", but, WHAT book is confirmed BY the Quran? Is it A. the Mahabharata. B. The Bible. C. The Talmud, or D. the Song of God? (B. the Bible even though ALL Muslims believe the Bible is corrupted). Another question could be, "According to Quran 10:94, if you are in doubt about the Quran, YOU, as a Muslim, are to go to: A. fellow Muslims and study the Quran together? B. Muslim scholars who not only know the Quran AND hadith. C. Jews and Christians for READING the "before Scriptures" (Bible), or D. NO one but yourself, for NO one can be trusted due to taqiyya "lying for Allah"? (The correct answer as absurd as it is ... C, "Jews and Christians" even though the Quran accuses Jews and Christians of hiding things IN their "Book" (Bible). Another question could go as: "According to Muhammad in Al Tabari hadith, a solar eclipse occurs by A. the sun falling out of it's chariot into the sea of water held over our heads by the power of Allah? B. the sun catching up with the moon? C. the moon blocking out the rays of the sun? D. the sun disappearing into the butt of the Al Buraq Muhammad said he flew on to Jerusalem in a "journey by night"? (the correct answer is A). Another could be, "according to Quran 36:40 -42, what is implied that the sun and moon RIDE in? Is it A. a chariot? B. the butt of the Al Baraq Muhammad says he flew on? C. a boat similar to that of Noah (i.e. the Ark) or D., neither, for the sun doesn't oribit around the earth, it is the earth that orbits around the sun? (Correct answer is C, a boat similar to that of Noah)." Another question could go, "Why did the rock RUN across the road carrying Moses' clothes according to Muhammad in sahih (authentic) hadith? Was it A. to freak out the Jews? B. to have an angry, naked Moses strike at it in a mindless way so the Jews could see that Moses was the "best of whom Allah created" as far as genitalia is concerned? C. to kick the flying donkey like creature known as the "Al Barak" that has the tail of a peacock and head of a human, or D. "to get to the other side"? (the answer is B. so Jews could see the perfect genitals of Moses). Anyway, THIS is the type of quiz, I feel, a Muslim must take AFTER a year of seeing videos. If he or she misses ONE, they stay at least another year before taking the test again. If they fail it a second time after two tries in two years, they go back to their place of origin, and are monitored and never able to come back.

Muslim "refugees" make themselves at home in Europe

By: jironde on: 11:53 AM
According to State and Defense Department sources speaking to Foreign Policy, the Pentagon is "dusting off," reevaluating and updating its contingency plans for war with Russia. The publication explains why all of this is Russia's fault, and where things may go from here. The article, written by well-known Russian politics critic and self-confessed Russophobe Julia Ioffe, explains this is "the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union" that the Pentagon has decided to review and update its contingency plans for war with Russia, based on revised appraisals of the country as a potential threat, rather than a potential partner, to NATO. The reason for the Pentagon's rush to update its war plans is, ostensibly, Russia's 'annexation' of Crimea, referring to the referendum held in the territory in the aftermath of the Maidan coup d''etat in Kiev in early 2014, which saw the peninsula breaking off from Ukraine and joining Russia. It also includes Russia's 'invasion' of eastern Ukraine, referring to the repeated allegations made by officials in Kiev that between nine and 200,000 regular Russian troops are engaged militarily in the eastern breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk. An unnamed senior defense official familiar with the updated plans told FP that "given the security environment, given the actions of Russia, it has become apparent that we need to make sure to update the plans that we have in response to any potential aggression against any NATO allies." The official did not comment and presumably was not asked about whether the US's policy of supporting regime change in Kiev against an unpopular but democratically elected president in February 2014 may have had anything to do with Russia's response to the Ukraine crisis, and thus with the deterioration of relations between Washington and Moscow. FP emphasized that the new plans are a response to a drastic departure from NATO-Russia relations which emerged following the collapse of the Soviet Union, where for many years Moscow acceded to the alliance's march eastward, signing defense and cooperation agreements, holding "joint military exercises, regular consultations, and even a NATO transit point in Ulyanovsk, Russia, for materiel heading to the fight in Afghanistan." Prior to the crisis in Ukraine, Russia was "neither a danger nor a priority." The official explained that the new plans, each having to do with hypothetical Russian aggression against the Baltic states (naturally), have two tracks, one focusing on US action against Russia in coordination with NATO, and the other considering the US acting independently of the alliance. As Ioffe explains, "both versions of the updated contingency plans focus on Russian incursions into the Baltics, a scenario seen as the most likely front for new Russian aggression." Moreover, "they are increasingly focusing not on traditional warfare, but on the hybrid tactics Russia used in Crimea and eastern Ukraine: 'little green men', manufactured protests, and cyber warfare." Taken together, this is said to comprise "a significant departure from post-Cold War US defense policy." If FP's estimation of the new thinking going into the Pentagon's war plans against Russia is correct, it remains uncertain just how the Russian military's 'little green men' would find their way into the Baltic states, given that unlike Crimea, where the Russian military had a long-term base agreement to host Russia's Black Sea Fleet, Moscow does not have any military bases in any of the Baltic countries. As far as Russia using the sneaky hybrid warfare methods of 'manufactured protests' and sending unidentified little green men to capture key positions in regional government, as has been alleged in eastern Ukraine, it seems that the Pentagon's planners simply cannot fathom the idea that people in some regions of an ethnically and socially divided country (like Ukraine) could have launched organic protests and organized self-defense forces following declarations from post-coup authorities in the capital that banning the Russian language and crushing counterrevolutionary resistance would be among their first priorities. Wargame Fail Foreign Policy explains with worry that since last year, repeated wargame scenario testing by the Rand Corporation for the US government of a hypothetical Russian 'hybrid invasion' of Estonia and Latvia has found that NATO would not be able to defend those countries at present force levels. Citing commentary by Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Development David Ochmanek, who now works at Rand and is involved in the simulations, FP noted that "given the recent reductions in the defense budgets of NATO member countries and American pullback from the region," NATO would be "outnumbered 2-to-1 in terms of manpower, even if all the US and NATO troops stationed in Europe were dispatched to the Baltics -including the 82nd Airborne, which is supposed to be ready to go on 24 hours' notice and is based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina." Citing hours of games involving the various scenarios which consistently resulted in a Russian victory, Ochmanek explained that "we just don't have those forces in Europe. The conclusion was that we are unable to defend the Baltics." FP notes that even "working on the assumption that the United States and NATO had already started making positive changes to their force posture in Europe," presumably via a massive increase in the NATO men and heavy equipment present along Russia's western borders, "the conclusion was slightly more upbeat, but not by much." Ochmanek noted that NATO "can defend the capitals, we can present Russia with problems, and we can take away the prospect of a coup de main. But the dynamic remains the same." The problem, in the defense analyst's view, is the 'logistics of distance', as well as the time necessary to mobilize the US military contingent meant to defend the Baltics. What Russia would possibly have to gain from attacking a NATO member, which raises the prospect of immediate nuclear and conventional retaliation from a numerically and military superior adversary, without the prospect of gains of any strategic importance, remains unclear, but it seems that the Pentagon's take on the matter is that until NATO has conventional superiority over Russia on Russia's own frontiers, the threat of the Russian bear will remain intolerably disturbing. The good news for hawkish-minded analysts in Washington appears to be that the Defense Department has factored the results of the wargaming thought experiments into their planning, the unnamed senior official telling FP that the results will be used "to better understand a situation that few of us have thought about in detail for a number of years," adding that even as things are at present, "I have no doubt that NATO will prevail and that we will restore the territorial integrity of any NATO member." In any case, Ioffe suggests that the Pentagon's updating of its war plans against Russia is actually Russia's fault, playing "right into Putin's paranoid fantasies about a showdown between Russia and NATO or between Russia and the United States." The columnist bouoyantly suggests that the Pentagon's plans are signals, "to Russia that the United States is not sitting on its hands," and to US policymakers "that the Pentagon feels that its ability to deal with the new threat landscape." http://ift.tt/1Om2sM2

Here's an Oldie. but Goodie: Six years out of office with two failed presidential bids now behind him, ex Vice President Quayle still ranks as America's favorite dumb politician because of what happened in Trenton on June 15, 1992. That's the day, you probably recall, a Trenton sixth grader had to teach the Vice President of the United States that potato is not spelled with an e on the end. In his 1994 memoir, Quayle devotes a whole chapter to the events in a classroom at Trenton's Munoz Rivera School - and the impact of them on his career. "It was a defining moment of the worst kind imaginable,'' Quayle wrote in the autobiography. "Politicians live and die by the symbolic sound bite.'' Quayle ruefully reported on a Washington Post article that suggested the Trenton flub got such wide media play because "it seemed like a perfect illustration of what people thought about me anyway.'' Less than five months after the incident, Quayle and President Bush were voted out of office, replaced by Bill Clinton and Al Gore. Ever since, the ex VP has been a straight-faced political joke. To understand why, it's important to know something about the way politics and the media work in America. "Image is all'' in politics, Quayle said, and the media not only project images, but also brings out any flaw in the picture. Quayle's image had been fodder for America comedians since the beginning, in 1988, when GOP presidential nominee George Bush tapped the 42-year-old Senator from Indiana as his VP. When Quayle got on the victory podium with Bush for the first time at the GOP convention that summer someone remarked that he "looked like a guy who had just won a game show.'' Quayle knew his boyish looks might hurt him and worked hard to present a studious image during the campaign. Despite a few blunders by Quayle, the Bush ticket prevailed in the election of 1988. Days later, seeking to stifle the buzz in political circles that he was intellectually challenged, Quayle sat down with a group of top American political reporters for a televised two-hour discussion. The newsmen, and many viewers, were left with the impression that, for all the jokes about him, the new vice president was a well-informed, politically savvy young man. Through most of his term - traveling the world to represent the president, meeting heads of state, giving speeches to all types of groups - Quayle managed to avoid any serious gaffes. At least that's how he put it in his bio, Standing Firm. June 15, 1992, started with Quayle flying out of Washington at 8:15 a.m. for a speech in New York that would be "about everything that was wrong with that city.'' Quayle told the Manhattan Institute in a speech at the Waldorf-Astoria that New York was a mess because the liberal political policies of the past 40 years had failed. In the book, Quayle said he knew little about his next stop, in Trenton, other than it was to help spotlight the city's Weed and Seed program, which still provides anti-drug education to grade schoolers while they also are being watched by adults until their parents get home from work. When he got the Munoz Rivera School, Quayle spoke with some women involved in the program, saw a drill team perform and looked in on some self-esteem classes before his aides started hustling him off to another classroom for a staged spelling bee. "What are we supposed to do?'' I asked Keith Nahigian, the advance man who had prepared this little photo op,'' Quayle wrote. "Just sit there and read these words off some flash cards, and the kids will go up and spell them at the blackboard,'' the handler told the VP. "Has anyone checked the card?'' another aide asked. "Oh, yeah,'' responded Nahigian. "We looked at them and they're just very simple words. No big deal.'' Enter William Figueroa, 12, a sixth-grader from the Mott School in the South Ward who had been bused to Munoz Rivera to take part in the vice presidential event. Figueroa knew how to spell potato, and he wrote it in a legible script on the blackboard when Quayle announced his word for the spelling bee. Quayle looked at the blackboard, then at his contest card, and gently and quietly told the boy, "You're close, but you left a little something off. The e on the end. "So William, against his better judgment and trying to be polite, added an e'' and won applause for it from those assembled in the classroom, including Mayor Doug Palmer, Quayle wrote. The misspelling wasn't mentioned until the end of the press conference afterward, when one reporter asked Quayle, "How do you spell potato?'' "I gave him a puzzled look, and then the press started laughing. It wasn't until that moment that I realized anything was wrong,'' Quayle wrote. "None of the staff people had told me. Caught off guard, I just rattled on a little to fill the air - something about how I wasn't going to get into spelling matters - but I knew something was really amiss.'' Indeed. At about the time of the gaffe, in fact, The Trentonian's night reporter was arriving at the office and hearing the editor's plea for a story suitable for page 1. "What are you talking about? You've got the vice president in town today,'' the reporter said. "You know Quayle's not going to say anything newsworthy,'' the editor responded. "I'm not talking about his political message. I'm saying watch for Quayle to foul up something,'' the reporter said. Soon after, the reporter who had covered Quayle's Trenton tour showed up in the newsroom and was ask how the event had gone. He said Quayle delivered the usual political pap, prompting the night reporter to holler out, "Yeah, but what did he foul up?" "Well,'' the reporter responded, "Quayle can't spell potato.'' The editor had his front-page story, complete with the only media interview with Figueroa, who said the experience made him believe all the talk about the vice president being "an idiot.'' Soon after the paper hit the streets, the scene in the Trenton classroom was playing on national television, just as Quayle had warned his wife it would be when he got home from Trenton the night before. Comics loved it, and a staffer from the David Letterman Show called The Trentonian the morning after seeking help locating Figueroa so he could be invited on the show. The next day, after his father sent him for a haircut and warned him to speak a bit more diplomatically about the vice president of the United State, Figueroa made his national television debut. The Trenton kid wowed the Letterman audience. He told of the spelling bee, saying, "I knew he was wrong, but since he's the vice president I went back to the blackboard and put an e on the end and went back to my seat. "Afterward, I went to the dictionary, and there was potato like I spelled it.'' Figueroa wouldn't call Quayle an "idiot'' again, in deference to his father, William Collazo, and Palmer, who had called the boy's mother and warned that funds for Weed and Seed could be cut off if the VP got mad enough. "I know he's not an idiot,'' he told the goading Letterman, "but he needs to study more. Do you have to go to college to be vice president?'' From then on, the potato incident would become a campaign weapon for the Democrats backing Clinton and Gore. Figueroa was flown in to deliver the pledge of allegiance at the Democratic National Convention that summer. Image-conscious Quayle laughed it off on the outside. But as his book indicates, he was fuming mad about the gaffe and blamed his aides for letting it happen and the press for exploiting it. He referred to Gore saying in a speech that a leopard had changed it "stripes,'' and said if he had said that, "there would have been a week of Quayle jokes on the late-night shows and three dozen editorial cartoons set inside zoos.'' The media's "obsession with my small verbal blunders went beyond the bounds of fairness,'' Quayle wrote in his book. Now, fast forward five years to 1997, when The Trentonian decided to look up William Figueroa to see how he was doing after his hour of fame. By then, he was a 17-year-old high school dropout who had fathered a child and was working a low-paying job at an auto showroom. Quayle, Mr. Family Values, couldn't be reached for comment on what had become of his "potato'' nemesis. http://ift.tt/1gv4yKH
