Police are hunting would-be thieves including one who set himself on fire during a botched smash-and-grab raid on a cash machine. Detectives released CCTV footage Monday which shows the gang arriving at a petrol station outside Portadown, Co Armagh with one man driving a Manitou type forklift at the ATM at speed. A white van arrives at the same time while the forklift repeatedly smashes into the cash machine, even bending its lifting bars in the process before the three men realise they are not able to break into the machine and get any money. One man then sets fire to the Manitou, but in the process of making sure the vehicle is ablaze, flames erupt from the cabin and appear to engulf him setting his hands alight. The man then jumps into the van and the trio speed off. The incident, on October 23, is the third time a digger type vehicle has been used to try and steal money from an ATM in the PSNI's E District which covers North Armagh, Banbridge and Newry since June but none have been successful.
