In the run-up to Monday's Iowa caucuses, White House hopeful Hillary Clinton has a lead of just three percentage points according to an influential last-minute poll. The Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics Iowa poll released on Saturday indicated a tight Democratic and Republican race. Democrat Clinton was only just ahead of self-declared socialist Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, at 45 percent to 42 percent. But the row over the former Secretary of State's use of an unsecured home server for e-mails, some of which the State Department deems too 'top secret' to disclose, just won't go away. Clinton continues to defend herself against claims that she made highly sensitive government secrets vulnerable to attackers. "I don't know which ones they have plucked out to fail to disclose and we have called for all of them to be released. This doesn't change anything about the fundamental facts. I never sent or received any e-mail marked classified. I take classified information very seriously," she said. For the Republicans, outspoken billionaire frontrunner Donald Trump leads by five points in the Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics Iowa poll. Trump and his closest rival ,Texas Senator Ted Cruz, stand at 28 percent and 23 percent respectively. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida was overwhelmingly the third choice, at 15 percent. Trump suggests that Cruz may not be legally qualified to be president.because he was born in Canada. Cruz, born to a US citizen mother and Cuban father in Calgary, Alberta, has brushed aside the attacks about his eligibility as pure politics. Like Sweden, Germany and Denmark rape crimes, previously unheard of in Ireland have started happening, at the same time that Muslim migrants are increasing in number in the country. On Monday two gang rapes occurred on the same night. But instead of reporting this, Irish state broadcaster RTE ran a story on Rabbits. And every major media outlet that did report the story has chosen not to identify the suspects, despite the victims being able to do so! THIS IS THE STORY. The media are complicit in the rape and further rapes by choosing not to identify. What follows is a typical misreport, from the 'Irish Independent', Can you help the police identify the criminals from this report? Read on: Gardai hunt gangs for two brutal assaults on young girls just minutes apart. The two incidents happened within an hour of each other in the Springfield area of Tallaght on Monday. The Herald earlier this week reported that a 14-year-old girl, who has learning difficulties, was subjected to a savage rape by a gang of young men between 4pm to 5pm. It has now emerged that two sisters, who are aged in their late teens, were also sexually assaulted in the same locality of Springfield around an hour after the first attack. Last night, sources said that gardai were confident that the two incidents were carried out by different groups of perpetrators. The rape of the 14-year-old schoolgirl happened shortly after 4pm on Monday in a green space close to the Ashgrove apartments, opposite St Mark's GAA Club, on the Cookstown Road. The traumatised victim has given a detailed statement to a specialist child interviewer, and officers are following a definite line of inquiry in the case. It is understood that CCTV has played a major part in the investigation, but no arrests have been made. Horrifying Before making her statement, the girl was taken to the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in the Rotunda Hospital following the horrifying ordeal, where she was treated for her injuries. "Officers will work tirelessly to track down the perpetrator of this particularly heinous crime. "It was an extremely serious sexual assault on a vulnerable victim, and investigators are following a definitive line of inquiry," a source said. Shockingly, gardai in Tallaght became aware of a second sexual assault later on Monday when it was reported to them that two sisters were attacked by a group of men as they walked through Maplewood, which is also in Springfield, at 5.30pm. The mother of these two young girls told a local newspaper that her daughters were walking back from the shops on Maplewood Drive when they were attacked by six young males. "They tried to hold my daughters' hands down by their sides and were groping them and putting their hands down their tops," the woman told the Tallaght Echo. "They also exposed themselves to my daughters. "My daughters put up a struggle and managed to get away; one of them broke the heel of her boot in the process. "They both feel that if they were younger or had not been strong enough to get away that this attack could have gone a lot further." "My daughters have been left terribly shook up and in shock, but thank God they were able to fight this group off," she added. As part of their investigations into both crimes, gardai sealed off the scenes in the Springfield area on Monday night and carried out forensic and technical examinations on Tuesday. Tallaght gardai are investigating both incidents and are appealing for information from the public. Local Fianna Fail councillor Charlie O'Connor, who is a former resident of the Ashgrove Estate, described how locals were "absolutely appalled" by the incident and appealed for anyone with information to contact gardai. "It is an extremely shocking thing to happen. I'd like to extend my sympathies to the victim and her family during this traumatic time," he said. According to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office, there was a rise in the number of assaults and sex attacks in the past year. Rape offences increased by 12.5pc, while sexual assault (not aggravated) offences increased by 15.7pc. Meanwhile, a total of 2,010 sexual offences were recorded in the State in 2013, representing a drop of 5pc on the 2,116 recorded the previous year. OFFENCES The number of such offences recorded in 2013 was, however, over 36pc higher than the recorded number of offences in 2009. Outgoing CEO of the Rape Crisis Centre Ellen O'Malley-Dunlop has said that the demand on rape crisis centres and sexual assault treatment units had "grown substantially" in recent years. "We have seen a 36pc increase in Dublin alone at one sexual assault treatment unit," she said. "There are five others in the country." http://ift.tt/1WR4ntw

29 Jan 2016 - Germany has announced new plans on restricting the flow of migrants which will include putting Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco on a "safe list" and enforcing a two-year ban on family reunions for asylum seekers granted limited refugee protection. The new measures come as a number of EU countries take measures to stem the flow of migrants through Europe. After discussions, Chancellor Angela Merkel's Conservatives and their left-leaning Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partners also agreed to speed up the deportations of failed applicants. The country can sometimes take months to complete the asylum application process and although 1,000 applications are rejected every day, only 18,000 migrants were deported in 2015. The agreement on Thursday (28 January) included input from Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavaria-based Christian Social Union (CSU) sister party, as well as the SPD, and will be a relief to party members as the debate the best way to deal with the migrant crisis dragged on. The new proposals will still need to be approved by the government and parliament before being implemented. Germany estimates that over one million asylum seekers arrived at their borders in 2015. The country has remained divided since the Cologne sex attacks which saw a number of German women allegedly sexual assaulted on New Year's Eve by men of 'North African' or 'Arab' descent and sparked far-right Pegida protests as well as pro-migrant counter protests. Elsewhere in the EU this week Sweden said as many as 80,000 people who arrived in the country in 2015 could fail in their requests for asylum and face deportation. And Denmark announced plans to remove items of value from immigrants to help fund their stay. Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, said: "The mood is good," after announcing the plans according to the Reuters news agency. Morocco has said it would repatriate any of its nationals who had arrived in Germany illegally. A person filing for asylum that comes from the safe list of countries is most likely to fail in their application. As the debate over asylum seekers intensified, the CSU were originally threatening to take Merkel's government to court if the party's request to stem the flow of asylum seekers was not addressed. This week, the UK has decided it will be taking 20,000 migrants until 2020 from camps in Syria but not from Europe this week. http://ift.tt/1SNG3cG

You couldn't make this shit up.. Don Harris, a white jew who "runs" the NAACP chapter of Maricopa County ( there's like 5 blacks in AZ so I guess they had to hire a JEW) caught making a sexist remark about a reporter. Not that I don't agree, she has nice tits.. but when you're attempting to spread liberal propaganda, while going after a few high school students over Ni**er shirts, you might want to keep your Matzo Ball mouth shut lol. Stereotypes ftw. ----------------------------------------- http://ift.tt/1QHwYRl The head of the Phoenix-area NAACP branch has offered to resign after coming under fire for his comments about a female reporter. Phoenix New Times reporter Ray Stern captured audio of the 77-year-old Don Harris making a crude remark to Stern about another reporter's appearance. Harris, the head of Maricopa County's NAACP branch, made the comment Wednesday after attending a community meeting about a photo in which Desert Vista High School students spelled out a racial slur. Harris says he emailed the NAACP branch's executive board members after the story broke to offer his resignation. He told the Arizona Republic that he is leaving the final decision in the board's hands. The Rev. Jarrett Maupin was facilitating the talks Wednesday. He has called Harris' comments "misogynistic" and called for his resignation.------------------------------------- http://ift.tt/1NCZn4m It was supposed to have been a discussion about racial sensitivity during a meeting with members of the community after a group of Phoenix high school students used their T-shirts to spell out the n-word . Shortly after the meeting let out last week, 77-year-old attorney and civil rights leader Don Harris, who is white and also the president of the Maricopa County, Ariz., chapter of the NAACP, stole the show after he was heard commenting about a reporter's breasts, the Huffington Post reports . "Nice ," he said to a male reporter for the Phoenix New Times, most likely referring to KPNX reporter Monique Griego, who was standing near the two, the Huffington Post reports. When asked about the comment, which was captured on audio and posted online, Harris told the New Times , "I apologize if anyone was offended. I could have said nothing ... I'm really sorry."

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, has made a plea to all parties to bring a peaceful resolution to the five-year conflict with talks due to start in Geneva on Friday. But there are already signs of the hurdles ahead with the Syrian opposition insisting that they will not attend. They say they have not received convincing answers to demands including an end to airstrikes and blockades. "Five years of this conflict have been too much," said De Mistura in an emotional plea to all sides. "The horror is in front of everyone's eyes. You must know also that we count on you to raise your voice, to say 'khalas', it is enough. You have seen enough conferences, two have already taken place. This one cannot fail." Special Envoy for Syria de Mistura's msg to women, men & children ahead of #SyriaTalks https://t.co/w8DSAT2FOd http://pic.twitter.com/OF72XmNAFF- United Nations (@UN) January 29, 2016 The Syrian government, who will send a delegation to the talks, is continuing to claw back territory from rebels with help from Iran and Russia. As well as the estimated quarter of a million deaths around eleven million Syrians have been displaced. Many have died in attempting to cross the sea to Europe, giving added impetus to the efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

By Daniel Nguyen Bernie Sanders, Last night at the CNN Democratic Presidential Town hall answered questions from moderator Chris Cuomo. The topic? You guessed it... HEALTHCARE.. Answering Cuomo's question on criticism about raising taxes, Sen. Sanders reaffirmed that in fact he will raise taxes to rid the country of it's private healthcare system, paving the way for free healthcare for every single American. Sounds like a great idea right? Every American should have healthcare...But is the future cost worth the coverage? Lets take a look.. Sanders' Proposal would effectively abolish the private health insurance industry, including companies like UnitedHealth Group, Aetna, and Anthem. It would charge the government with designing and administering a universal, comprehensive insurance product that would cover "the entire continuum of health care, from inpatient to outpatient care; preventive to emergency care; primary care to specialty care, including long-term and palliative care; vision, hearing and oral health care; mental health and substance abuse services; as well as prescription medications, medical equipment, supplies, diagnostics and treatments." Berniecare would also abolish cost-sharing by patients; i.e., no co-pays, deductibles, or coinsurance payments, and minimal premiums. "No more fighting with insurance companies when they fail to pay for charges," says Sanders. While Sanders bills his plan as "Medicare for all," it bears little resemblance to Medicare, which does in fact require premiums and cost-sharing from its enrollees, though this cost-sharing is heavily subsidized by younger taxpayers. In addition, Medicare does not cover every category of health care service, nor does it cover catastrophic health care needs. As Ezra Klein notes , "The list of what Sanders's plan would cover far exceeds what Medicare offers, suggesting, more or less, that pretty much everything will be covered, under all circumstances." Berniecare would increase total federal spending by at least 55% From The CBO Baseline of $51,388 To $79,668 Warren Gunnels, Sanders' policy director, retained Gerald Friedman , an economist at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, to come up with a fiscal score of the Sanders plan. Friedman estimates that the plan would require $13.8 trillion in new government spending in the decade spanning 2017 through 2026. But that estimate is misleading, for reasons I'll outline below. (Bear with me; this section and the next one have a lot of numbers.) The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimate that national health care spending from 2017-26 will approximate $47.4 trillion. $13.6 trillion of that is spent by the federal government and $8.4 trillion by state and local government; the remainder is spent directly by private businesses ($9.2 trillion) and individuals ($12.8 trillion). Friedman, the UMass economist, believes that the Sanders plan will reduce national health care spending by $6.3 trillion, presumably by some combination of rationing care and government price controls, though these aren't specified. Sanders misleadingly implies that his plan wouldn't require rationing ("No more fighting with insurance companies"), but a footnote in the Friedman memo indicates that Berniecare would fail to cover "20% of out-of-pocket spending" because it is "deemed not medically necessary." So Again Ask Yourselves...Is the cost really worth the coverage? Shout off Below Let Me Know What You Guys Think..

25 Jan 2016 - The Dutch EU presidency has urged states to settle on a new pan-European border force to reinforce external borders. The ministers' gathering comes as the European Council president said Schengen will fail in two months. EU interior and justice ministers gathered in Amsterdam on Monday for a two-day "informal meeting" aimed at bolstering support for a pan-European border and coast guard force in a bid to relief pressure on the 28-nation bloc's external borders. The meeting comes amid Europe's largest wave of migration that in 2015 witnessed more than one million migrants, many seeking asylum in the EU after fleeing war-torn countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. The ministers are also expected to discuss ways to boost intelligence cooperation along with counterterrorism measures in the wake of November's terrorist attacks in Paris, which left at least 130 people dead and hundreds injured. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said that actions must be taken quickly in order to preserve the passport-free travel zone. "We want to preserve Schengen, but it must, however, provide results for a European solution. And fast," de Maiziere said in a statement. One of the measures to be discussed during the meeting is the use of Article 26 of the Schengen Borders Code, which would allow member states to extend internal border controls beyond the 30-day limit. The meeting is the first of its kind under the six-month Dutch European Union presidency, which aims to broker a deal on a new border and coast guard force by June 30. On Sunday, Greek Deputy European Affairs Minister Nikos Xidakis criticized the Austrian interior minister for proposing Greece's "temporary exclusion" from the Schengen passport-free travel zone. Greece has struggled with the influx of more than 800,000 migrants in 2015, and is considered a gateway for asylum seekers entering the EU. Last week, European Council President Donald Tusk said Schengen would fail if the migration crisis was not "brought under control" in two months. http://ift.tt/1NuzXGe

The Week's Most Kinetic, Magnetic, and Epigenetic Headlines National Review magazine is a leading light of the American conservative movement widely known for firing writers the moment they say something remotely interesting or vital. Last Thursday night the hoary, mendacious, pus-leaking publication unleashed an online symposium called " Conservatives Against Trump ," featuring 22 diatribes about why the real-estate magnate and connoisseur of Eastern European vaginas is a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad man who would be bad, bad, bad, bad for conservatism and the Republican Party and-although they didn't say it-the careers of people who write for cucked-out rags such as National Review. The symposium includes essays from weeping gerbil Glenn Beck, chirping hamster Erick Erickson, constipated wax figure Cal Thomas, and a gaggle of neocon warmongers many of whom may have worn yarmulkes at one point or another in their lives. According to " The Editors " at NR: Trump is a philosophically unmoored political opportunist who would trash the broad conservative ideological consensus within the GOP in favor of a free-floating populism with strong-man overtones. Obviously, no one with a lick of political sense wants or needs a strong man these days. True conservatism involves always being resolutely weak. David Boaz , who describes himself as the "lone libertarian" among all the conservatives at NR, warns solemnly: "Mark your calendars, white students at Portland Community College-the entire month of April has been set aside to help you feel bad about yourselves."Not since George Wallace has there been a presidential candidate who made racial and religious scapegoating so central to his campaign. Trump launched his campaign talking about Mexican rapists and has gone on to rant about mass deportation, bans on Muslim immigration, shutting down mosques, and building a wall around America. George Wallace-another great American with more charisma in a single toenail than all of National Review's staff combined. In his inimitably dismissive manner, Trump waved away the National Review dogpiling hit piece against him by calling NR a "dying paper" that "people don't even think about." Trump gained further media scorn last week by retweeting a satirical photo of Jeb Bush from the Twitter account WhiteGenocideTM that is helmed by a person calling himself "Donald Trumpovitz" who claims to be located in "Jewmerica." But like some pesky giant Japanese movie monster, Trump merely grows stronger with each escalating media attack. It's almost as if he eats their hatred like videogame power pellets and uses it to recharge his batteries. "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody , and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?" he said last week in Iowa. "It's, like, incredible." WHITENESS-SHAMING MONTH AT PORTLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE Mark your calendars, white students at Portland Community College -the entire month of April has been set aside to help you feel bad about yourselves. PCC's "Whiteness History Month" will kick off on April Fools Day and will give white students ample time to self-flagellate about the undeniable fact that all over the world, white cultures outperform black and brown cultures when it comes to things such as IQ, longevity, income, and technological innovation. Administrators have made it very clear that unlike Black History Month, this is not a "celebratory endeavor." They also distinguish between "whiteness" and "white people" and that the only way for white people to redeem themselves is to renounce their whiteness and aid in the dismantling of all the suffering and hatred and medical advances and air conditioning that whiteness has wreaked upon this world. BYE, BYE, MISS AMERICAN HEBE Don McLean is best known for his mega-pretentious and overlong 1971 song " American Pie " that was about Jesus and Satan and Mick Jagger and Buddy Holly and about how crestfallen McLean felt when he drove his Chevy to the levee, only to discover to his dismay that it was dry. But now the gentle-throated bard is being not only accused of domestic violence against his wife of 30 years, he is being accused of something far, far worse-anti-Semitism. " Jewish wife claims Don McLean is anti-Semitic ," blares the headline on Page Six in an article that features a mugshot of the 70-year-old folk rocker after his arrest for allegedly threatening to strangle his wife. Patrisha McLean is alleging that Mr. American Pie has a "violent temper" and has physically assaulted her numerous times. What's worse, she says "his rage was unfathomably deep and very scary-calling me horrible things like 'hebe' (I'm Jewish)." This is a much more serious allegation than merely knocking his wife around and threatening to strangle her, which is obviously why Page Six's headline focused solely on the anti-Semitism instead. Perhaps Page Six should change its name to Page Six Million. OXFORD DICTIONARY SCOLDED FOR "SEXISM" Michael Oman-Reagan describes himself as "an activist, artist, and scholar of social movements" whose "activism works for justice, broadly defined," and he looks exactly like what you'd suspect a fella who describes himself that way would look. The hyphenated-surnamed activist recently unleashed his Twitter lightsaber and wielded it against the evil Death Star that is the Oxford English Dictionary, scolding and chiding and shaming and reprimanding it for the unabashedly "sexist" manner in which it deployed sample sentences in its definitions. He objected to the fact that its definition for "rabid" included the example "a rabid feminist." The word "shrill" mentioned "the rising shrill of women's voices." And "psyche" was explained with "I will never really fathom the female psyche." Best of all, "housework" was elaborated upon with the delicious phrase "she still does all the housework." Representatives for the Oxford English Dictionary were initially defiant , then they rolled over, exposed their pink bellies, and burped up the usual fawning apologies that they were going to take a whole new look at how they may be hurting the feelings of some fat, ice-cream-gobbling hag in Omaha who owns 14 cats and hasn't seen a penis in 20 years. BODY COUNT: "RIGHT WING EXTREMISM" V. "ISLAMIC EXTREMISM" A professor of history at Florida State College has crunched the numbers and claims that widespread recent reports that " right wing extremists " in America are far deadlier than "Islamic extremists" is a bunch of hooey, poppycock, balderdash, flapdoodle, and bunkum. Professor Andrew Holt explains that the two gaping flaws that render such claims meaningless are that they fail to account for the number of fatalities from the World Trade Center attacks of 9/11/2001 and the cumulative number of terrorist attacks worldwide. Holt says: Indeed, if you include the death totals from 9/11 in such a calculation, then there have been around 62 people killed in the United States by Islamic extremists for every one American killed by a right wing terrorist (a 62 to 1 ratio if you divide the slightly over 3000 deaths due to Islamic extremism by the 48 deaths attributed to right wing extremism).... If we move beyond America's borders, then the disparity becomes far greater, with somewhere around 90% of the world's terrorism related deaths attributable to Islamic extremism, and only a fraction of 1% attributable to right wing extremism. ARIZONA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS POSE IN T-SHIRTS THAT SPELL OUT "NI**ER" An " Appalling Yearbook Photo " featuring six giggling white high-school girls standing in a line with their T-shirts spelling out "NI**ER" has drawn wrath and scorn and outrage and calls for elaborate and exquisite and downright sadistic punishments to be rained down upon the girls' insensitive and hateful heads. Although the girls received a five-day suspension, this was not nearly enough suffering for the flesh-hungry hordes of social media. No, these girls needed to be shamed and ruined and have their spirits broken and have every future potential spouse and employer know that during their high-school years, they had the audacity to pull off an absolutely indefensible and horrific stunt such as this. Personally, we think this is a severe overreaction. There is nothing at all wrong with the word "nipper"; in fact, we find it somewhat cute. --- Biden Comments On Military Intervention In Syria, Requires Immediate Clarification --- Vice President Joe Biden said Saturday that if upcoming negotiations fail and no political solution to the civil war in Syria is possible, the United States is prepared to step in with major military force "We do know it would better if we can reach a political solution but we are prepared ... if that's not possible ... to have a military solution to this operation in taking out Daesh ," Biden said following a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.Another U.S. official quickly stepped in to clarify Biden's remarks, saying that the military solution applied only to the Islamic State, as opposed to Syria in its entirety, Reuters reports. The official added that "there is no change in U.S. policy." According to the White House, negotiating a settlement between the Syrian government and rebel forces is of great importance, as it would help bring the Islamic State down another notch. Source: http://ift.tt/1Qrtr9M --- So, Biden thinks that the negotiations between the Syrian Government ( Party #1 ) and the (rebel) "Syrian Democratic Forces" ( party #2 ) {keeping in mind that the moderately radical Islamist's ( party #3 ) backed by the Turks, the Qataris and the Saudis are stating they will not participate until the Syrian Government and the Russians give up and stop bombing terrorist. Source: http://ift.tt/1VifsCr } will somehow make ISISISILIS/Daesh ( party #4 ) dry up and blow away? It is widely known that the USA has soldiers fighting along side the Syrian Democratic Forces against ISISISILIS/Daesh. Is Biden suggesting that the USA will pull its forces out and then reinsert them to make his statement true? Are any of the USA soldiers fighting along side the Syrian Democratic Forces going to negotiate with the Syrian Government the participation of ISISISILIS/Daesh in a cease fire? --- The truth is, the Saudis and Qataris want to pipe oil and gas across Syria and on to Turkey and Western Europe and make trillions of dollars doing it. And the US Government is fearful of the Rooskie military power and the Rooskie ability to resist the owners of the USA and Western European Governments uncontested rule over the whole planet. But it would look bad if they outright stated that, and so they must lie to you. And one littlelie eventualy grows into a giant unavoidably obvious lie.

The National Review's editorial calling for conservatives to unite against Donald Trump frets at one point about the real estate mogul's rhetoric. But some of the contributors who sent in essays for the special issue would likely fail if the magazine applied the same standards. "Trump has gotten far in the GOP race on a brash manner, buffed over decades in New York tabloid culture," the editorial states. "His refusal to back down from any gaffe, no matter how grotesque, suggests a healthy impertinence in the face of postmodern PC (although the insults he hurls at anyone who crosses him also speak to a pettiness and lack of basic civility)." However, the same "lack of basic civility" could also be pointed out in these people the magazine enlisted to present themselves as more sensible alternatives to the Republican front-runner. Bill Kristol The Weekly Standard founder and Twitter punching bag - who tried to make the case last April for "everyday American" Dick Cheney as a 2016 candidate - said in his essay for the Review that conservatives should "seek guidance from those we admire." Kristol does not specify whether that argument was on his mind when he argued that people should not go "hysterical" in December 2014 when racist remarks by then-pro basketball owner Donald Sterling were brought to light. Or when he pushed the idea two months earlier that Republicans could score points by blaming President Barack Obama for Ebola outbreaks in African countries. Glenn Beck Beck was among the first high-profile conservatives to express skepticism of Trump's Republican bonafides, going so far as to accuse him of being a vehicle for "big business" to discredit Tea Partiers. In his Review essay, the Blaze founder revisits those arguments. But it should be noted that the special anti-Trump issue was released hours after Beck suggested that both Trump and Obama could be "psychopaths." And that's without getting into Beck's accusations that the president is "a racist," or his defense of anti-LGBT legislation, or any number of inflammatory statements he has made throughout his career. Michael Medved The former film critic took aim at Trump's stated goal to "build a wall" at the US-Mexico border and deporting 11 million undocumented immigrants from the former country. He also accused the businessman of portraying "the living, breathing, bellowing personification of all the nasty characteristics Democrats routinely ascribe to Republicans" on the campaign trail. Of course, Medved also insisted in March 2014 that no state had ever instituted a ban on same-sex marriages, calling such a notion "a liberal lie." As Media Matters pointed out, 30 states had such laws in place at the time in their state constitutions. L. Brent Bozell The president of the Media Research Center punctuated his appearance in the special issue on Thursday night by boasting to Fox's Megyn Kelly, "Anyone who knows me knows I was fighting the establishment well before fighting the establishment was cool." He did not mention how "cool" it was in February 2014 when it was revealed that newspaper columns and books published under his name were actually written by one of his employees, Tim Graham. Last year, he accused "the radical left" of instituting a shutdown against discerning thought, bemoaning in a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference that "censorship is everywhere" because opposition to both homophobia and the use of an anti-Native American slur to describe Washington D.C's football team has become more widespread. Erick Erickson The RedState founder had his own dust-up with Trump last August, when he disinvited the entrepreneur from his site's event for saying Kelly had "blood coming out of her wherever." But even fellow conservative Neil Cavuto pointed out at the time that Erickson had his own history of sexist "needling." Kelly herself slammed Erickson in 2013 when he argued that mothers who chose to work rather than stay at home were doing a disservice to their children. Erickson infamously followed up that skirmish by calling Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) "abortion Barbie." Katie Pavlich The Townhall editor accuses Trump of making a living "out of preying on and bullying society's most vulnerable, with the help of government." But less than a month ago, Pavlich dismissed the idea of white privilege, calling the idea itself racist and declaring that "confronting white privilege is going to the tanning salon." Last May, she also attempted to blame courses on the subject in Baltimore school for the tensions that spurred rioting in the city following the death of Freddie Gray. Four months later, she went even further and accused the Black Lives Matter movement of promoting "the execution of police officers." Link to the National Review Articles: http://ift.tt/1S8BJDn

Putin's People Are Not Happy With Us January 19, 2016 Russia Update The last two years have been rather tough for the Russian government's main English-language propaganda outlet, RT. Following Russia's illegal and nearly-universally-condemned annexation of the Crimean peninsula, RT anchor Liz Wahl, then anchor and correspondent Sara Firth, quit in protest of what they called "propaganda" which they were forced to spread in order to cover up the Kremlin's foreign policy activity. Many of the personalities who remained on the network had their reputations damaged by their own words. The Interpreter alone documented an RT editor who knew information on their website was fake but kept the content up for weeks; a German "expert" and frequent guest who is really a major neo-Nazi leader and publicist ; another frequent RT guest who is a 9/11 truther and avowed racist ; an RT host who believes that some of the victims of 9/11 knew about the attack beforehand and tried to capitalize on it; a "whistle-blower" and financial expert for RT who thinks that the World Bank and the Vatican are run by a species of non-human coneheads (which is why the pope wears a big hat); yet another RT host who thinks North Korea would be a nice place to live ; an anchor who interviewed an entertainer (named by RT as a journalist) who thinks HIV does not cause AIDS ; an (already discredited) RT field correspondent who made up a story about being shot at in Ukraine and filmed evidence that proves he was lying ; a "human rights expert" who, despite being a holocaust denier who is friends with convicted hate criminals , is a frequent guest on RT; and an RT columnist who is an associate of a now-deported Russian agent and who threatened to sue us just for asking basic questions about his resume. Our work on RT had an effect - basic Google searches of some of RT's favorite guests and personalities netted our articles exposing these people as cranks. And this, of course, does not even mention our near-daily debunking of Kremlin propaganda, spread by RT, concerning Russia's foreign and domestic policy, and our special reports tearing apart RT's coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the shooting down of civilian airliner MH17 . Not only has the network been further discredited by having to defend increasingly-obvious Kremlin deceptions, RT's claims about its importance and reach have also been undermined. Despite their boasts that they have the largest online audience of any news agency in the world, leaked documents and independent analysis of RT's own content show that the Kremlin-run news outlet is misrepresenting its viewership and in fact has a minuscule audience in the West . Not only are "its most-watched segments are on 'metrosexuals, bums,' and earthquakes," but its most popular content are video reposted from other news agencies. Many Youtube videos which feature RT's original content average between 200 and 300 views - hardly comparable to the BBC or private networks like CNN or Fox. Beyond these problems, 2016 will bring a 9% budget cut for the propaganda station, the result of Russia's quickly-evaporating wealth as a result of low oil prices, currency devaluation, and financial mismanagement. So one might understand why Putin's people are a bit grumpy. There has been a significant debate about whether RT is worth the attention that many have paid them, especially since very few now take them seriously. In fact, The Interpreter has been told by some readers that they are not worth our time. In principle, we believe that a $300 million Kremlin-directed propaganda outlet, which is consistently proven wrong, is worth writing about. In practice, however, it's been a very long time since we felt RT was important enough to write an entire article on the topic. RT, however, seems to think that our magazine - with our staff of three writers and a budget which is less than 1/2000th of theirs - is enemy number one. On Monday, RT's Crosstalk, which they describe as their "flagship program," spent a 30-minute show maligning The Interpreter and lying about our funding sources in light of our recent announcement that this magazine is now funded by RFE/RL . In the segment, titled "offensive propaganda," there are few facts, a lot of name calling, and a significant amounts of talk about things which have no bearing to The Interpreter or our work. Yet there are still factual errors. For instance, one guest repeatedly states that The Interpreter is funded by Institute of Modern Russia, despite the fact that both our announcement of our new funding and RFE/RL's clearly state that this is no longer the case. While none of our full-time writers are even mentioned, RT's guests attack The Interpreter by attacking our "friends" like Russian journalist Masha Gessen whom they describe as "mental." Not only is Gessen a well-respected journalist and author, she's never written for our magazine. Journalist Peter Pomerantsev is also mentioned, and while he did co-author a paper about Russian propaganda (a paper which was heavily critical of RT) with The Interpreter 's Editor-In-Chief Michael Weiss, he is not a member of our staff nor has he contributed other articles to our magazine. Leon Aron is also mentioned by one guest, and not only is he not a contributor to this publication, a search on The Interpreter shows that he has not even been mentioned by any of our writers in nearly two years. Anne Applebaum, Ed Lucas, and other journalists are mentioned who have no association with this magazine at all. To be clear, these journalists are respected colleagues, hard working, and knowledgeable, and RT does not even make an attempt to point out what is wrong about any of them, but none of the authors mentioned are directly associated with this magazine. In other words, the RT segment is nothing more than a series of substance-free ad hominem attacks against a list of disparate writers, and somehow this is supposed to convince their viewers that The Interpreter is somehow a "dangerous" and sinister government plot to "dissolve" Russia. It's almost as if none of RT's guests have ever even read our content. RT's guests also say a series of statements that are so ridiculous that perhaps they require no examination here. One guest argues that the Cold War is over and so "having Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty makes as much sense as having NATO." Another says that "they" (meaning, I presume, The Interpreter and RFE/RL) often call RT a propaganda network, "but they never give any empirical evidence, they never cite an example of what they mean by that." Again, these guys clearly don't read The Interpreter . This is hardly the first time RT has attacked this publication. In fact, one of their authors, Bryan MacDonald, a "journalist" of questionable credentials, has mentioned The Interpreter at least ten times in just the last year in both articles and video segments. Is that because we are a tour de force of American propaganda, or is it because we exposed some of his own questionable online modus operandi in the past? In reality, not a single article published by RT or any of its guests has ever disproved or debunked a single thing that The Interpreter or any of its staff members have written. The opposite, as you can see from just a few of the examples we have listed above, is not true. A debate or a discussion of the facts is welcomed, but that is not what RT has done here (nor do they ever). This is just name calling, and RT's continual focus on The Interpreter belays the fact that our efforts to carefully document what the Russian government is doing, both at home and abroad, has netted results. Frankly, we're flattered.

Bill Clinton is like the aging rocker who has gone from playing baseball stadiums to barely filling night clubs. Only about 100 people turned out to see Clinton in Salem, New Hampshire Wednesday as he campaigned for his wife. The event, hosted in Hillary's campaign's office, was a stark contrast to Republican rival Donald Trump's crowds. Clinton delivered a largely negative speech, attacking Republicans over the Benghazi investigation and their various plans to repair the damage created by the Obama administration. WMUR reports Clinton "glossed over" Bernie Sanders's current 27-point lead in the New Hampshire polls, calling it a "home field disadvantage." http://ift.tt/1V9fXOX

Bucktown, IL - A large knife was used in an attempted armed robbery in a Bucktown alley in the 1700-block of North Wolcott, surveillance video shows. It appears the perpetrators may have been driving up and down alleys in the Bucktown neighborhood looking for an opportunity. They found one when a woman, a nanny, had just arrived home and her garage door was still up. The victim had just pulled into the garage after running some errands when home surveillance cameras show a silver car drive by in the alley behind her. As seen on the footage, a man jumps out of the vehicle and surprises her from behind with a large knife. The crime occurred in broad daylight at 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday. As she screamed, the nanny fought her attacker off as he attempted to take her purse. After a minute of struggle the robber ran off, dropping his knife in the alley. He quickly grabs it before getting back in his getaway car.

Parachute Jump Fail - Mexican Army

By: jironde on: 10:55 PM
Overview Practically every day civilians are dying in the renewed violence between the PKK and the Turkish army. Some of the dead have been on the streets for weeks now, and can't be buried by their families. The government says it's fighting terrorism. But is it? And why is Europe not saying anything? 1. What is happening in Turkey's southeast? Do you have some striking examples to explain the situation? There are dead bodies on the streets of Sur, the old city centre of Diyarbakir. Their families have been on hunger strike since 2 January to force the authorities to enable the burial of the dead, but to no avail. On 13 January, the Human Rights Association of Diyarbakir talked to the assistant governor of Diyarbakir, Mehmet Emir, who gave permission to collect the bodies that afternoon. But when the group, including HDP MP Sibel Yigitalp, came to Sur district, the police said they could take the bodies but only if they first brought in any weapons or explosives that were lying in the vicinity of the bodies. Also, they said they couldn't be responsible for the group's safety. Then the group deemed it too dangerous to pick up the bodies. It concerns the bodies of Mesut Seviktek, Isa Oran (both died on 23 December), Ramazan "Og"ut (died 30 December) and Rozerin Cukur (died on 8 January). The same happens in other areas where curfews are imposed. Civilians are being killed, including children. Last weekend in Cizre for example, 10 year old Hayrettin Sinik died on the way to hospital after he was wounded when a mortar shell hit his family's house. Earlier, on 15 January, B"usra Akalin, also 10 years old, died in Cizre, after she was wounded the same way. Whole towns and neighbourhoods are being destroyed. The army uses heavy artillery to shell residential areas and is indiscriminate about who and where the shells hit. Houses, mosques, schools, all are damaged, sometimes so heavily that they can't be used anymore. Garbage is piling up on the streets. According to Faysal Sariyildiz, HDP MP who has been in Cizre for weeks now and who reports intensively via twitter, the city smells like garbage and gun powder. Thousands and thousands of people are on the run from the violence, and because there is a shortage of food. Often the electricity gets cut too. The state makes it impossible for people to live in their houses and continue their daily lives in any way. They leave sometimes during the curfews, with a piece of white sheet tied to a stick to try to protect themselves against snipers. 2. So, there is a war going on in Turkey? There is. But it's not new. It started in 1984 when the PKK carried out its first two attacks against the state. Ever since, there has been a civil war, according to the common definition that a civil war is an armed conflict inside the territory of a state, with active participation of that state, and with a death toll of over one thousand per year (which was not measured every year since 1984, but with an overall death toll of more than 40,000, this criteria can be considered met). The term civil war is somewhat deceptive and intra-state war would be more accurate, since it doesn't necessarily mean that several groups of civilians are fighting each other, which is indeed not the case in Turkey: it is a war between the state and the PKK, and explicitly not a war between Kurds and Turks. However, one of the combatant parties, the PKK, considers the war a colonial one too. They consider the Turkish army and the Turkish state an occupying power. In their early years, in the 1970's and 1980's and into the 1990's, they wanted secession from Turkey, but for more than a decade they have changed their goal to autonomy. This doesn't make the Turkish authorities less of an occupying power, in their eyes, so the current war is still a colonial one too. This becomes obvious for example in KCK press statements (the KCK is an umbrella organization of Kurdish groups, of which the PKK is a part as well), in which they often refer to the Turkish army as 'occupation army'. The PKK considers self-determination a right, and indeed this right is laid down firmly in international treaties to which Turkey is a party. It is inevitable that eventually this conflict will be solved by granting the Kurds some form of autonomy. When that day comes, it is not very logical that the Turkish army and police, which have suppressed and massacred the Kurds since even before the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923, will remain the legitimate armed force of Kurdistan. They have lost that legitimacy, comparable to the Iraqi army having no business anymore in the now autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where the once illegal peshmerga- considered terrorists by Saddam Hussein - have been transformed into the legitimate armed forces. At the end of 2015, the Democratic Society Congress (DTK), an umbrella group of dozens of civil society organizations and local councils as well as members of political parties related to the Kurdish movement (the HDP on a national level and the DBP on a regional level), stressed once again that autonomy is essential for the solution of the Kurdish issue. Several mayors already declared their municipalities autonomous (now arrested, and some capitals changing). Ever since, the war, previously mainly fought in the rural areas of the Kurdish regions, has moved to the cities. As much as the Turkish government wants the outside world to believe that it is actually fighting the PKK in the cities and declaring curfews to protect the citizens against their crackdown on the PKK, the PKK members from the mountains have not descended into the towns and cities of Kurdistan. The fight against the army and police in the towns is carried out by a youth group, the YPS, the Yek^iney^en Parastina Siv^il, in English the Civil Protection Units. These groups of young men and women were formerly known as the YDG-H, the Patriot Revolutionary Youth Movement. They consider themselves the legitimate armed forces of the municipalities where self rule has been declared. Where the YDG-H was mainly armed with Molotov cocktails and stones, the YPS also carries Kalashnikovs and sometimes rocket launchers. There is an important difference between the PKK and the YPS. The YPS may be affiliated with the PKK, but they are not, like official PKK members, under the command of the PKK leadership based in the Qandil mountains in the north of Iraq. At least, that's what the PKK vehemently claims. They are deciding on their own course independently, and by doing so the youth movement can be compared to the women's movement KJA (Free Women Congress), which also doesn't take orders from anyone. There is only one person the YPS would listen to, and that is PKK leader Abdullah "Ocalan. He has been in isolation on Imrali prison island since 5 April 2015 - well, it can't be ruled out that behind the scenes there is some contact, but he cannot receive his family, lawyers or members of the HDP, and thus cannot make any public statement via them. If "Ocalan could speak again, the chance that violence would decrease is considerable. The longer the isolation continues though, the harder it gets for the AKP government to break it: by isolating him they try to minimize his relevance, but of course the opposite is happening, which will become clear the minute he speaks again. Similar situations happened before, like in 2012 when there was a hunger strike among PKK members and political prisoners in many prisons in Turkey, and some hunger strikers were about to die. The moment "Ocalan said the hunger strike had to stop, the inmates started to eat again. The YPS wants the Turkish army out of 'their' territories; the army of course doesn't accept it, equates the PKK with the YPS and tries to annihilate them. It's remarkable that they haven't reached their goal despite a few months of fighting, as NATO's second biggest army, against a contingent of masked young men and women with Kalashnikovs and rockets. Then again, the streets in these towns, especially in Sur (the old city of Diyarbakir) but also in Cizre and Silopi, can be narrow, and a tank or armoured vehicle doesn't get you very far. (Frankly, Turkey has shown some restraint.) In these city battles, a lot of civilians die - see later question. It is, however, nothing new that the civilian population falls victim to state brutality. In the 1990s, some three thousand villages in the Kurdish areas were burnt down by the army and thousands of people fled to other towns and cities. It is why many of the refugees of those days ended up in the Sur district of Diyarbakir, where violence is intense now and where thousands of citizens once again had to run for their lives and find shelter elsewhere. 3. Do you have some statistics on curfews and civilian deaths? Yes, several organisations have been documenting what's happening. The Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV) made a fact sheet about the curfews and their consequences. There have been 58 officially confirmed, open-ended and round-the-clock curfews in at least nineteen districts of seven cities (they mention the provinces of Diyarbakir, Mardin, Sirnak and Hakkari, but more specifically for example about Silvan, Dargecit, Nusaybin, Sur, Silopi, Cizre, Y"uksekova, Lice and others). In these areas, around 1,377,000 people reside. They state that, based on data from their documentation centre, 162 civilians have been killed, among whom 29 women, 32 children, and 24 people over 60 years of age. Also according to the TIHV, between 11 December 2015 and 8 January 2016 alone, 79 civilians were killed, of whom fourteen women and one unborn baby (killed by a gunshot in the womb). Of these 79 people, at least 22 were shot within the boundaries of their homes, either inside the house, on the doorstep or balcony or in the garden. Four people died in connected operations outside the curfew areas. The curfews in Sur and Cizre are ongoing: on 19 January, they were in their respective 49th and 38th day. Based on media reports, TIHV claims that in every curfew area some ten thousand security forces have been dispatched, alongside hundreds of armoured military vehicles such as tanks, armoured vehicles and cannons. Starting from 19 January, the curfew in Silopi, which started on the same day as the one in Cizre, was be lifted during the day between 5am and 6pm, but it will continue in the evening and night hours. For details about the dates of the curfews and the names and ages of civilian deaths, check the 'detailed table' TIHV offers in its website. It is unclear how many members of the security forces (army and police) have been killed in the ongoing violence. It is also not clear how many of the civilians killed were actually YPS members. There are losses among PKK members too, but these deaths in general don't occur in the cities but in the rural areas and in the Qandil mountains, where bombing by the Turkish army is ongoing. There are exceptions: in the eastern city of Van, twelve PKK members were executed on 10 January, more information in this article, and in Kiziltepe two PKK members were shot by police while on a mission there. Human Rights Watch issued a report halfway through December and had meticulously investigated fifteen civilian deaths in September and November in Cizre (Sirnak province), Silvan (Diyarbakir) and Nusaybin (Mardin). The report doesn't offer detailed statistics, but describes the conditions under which the population has to live, including lack of food, water, electricity and medical care. Emma Sinclair-Webb, senior researcher based in Turkey, says in the report: 'The Turkish government should rein in its security forces, immediately stop the abusive and disproportionate use of force, and investigate the deaths and injuries caused by its operations. To ignore or cover up what's happening to the region's Kurdish population would only confirm the widely held belief in the southeast that when it comes to police and military operations against Kurdish armed groups, there are no limits - there is no law.' The whole report can be read here. Amnesty International too spoke out against the curfews and military operations, in a so-called 'urgent action'. Not only do they point to the curfews, which lack legal basis, and civilian deaths, but also draw attention to the fact that demonstrations against the curfew are usually banned and attacked by police, thus violating the right to free assembly. The urgent action can be read here. 4. Who says the civilians all died of army or police fire? Couldn't it be YPS bullets or rockets as well? That could very well be. The problem is that none of the deaths is thoroughly and independently investigated. The bodies are taken to the morgue, where an autopsy report is written, and that's it. The state has the obligation to thoroughly investigate the violent death of citizens, but it doesn't. 5. There was a court case at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to have the curfews declared illegal. How did that turn out? The case is pending. The lawyers who applied at the ECHR asked for the curfews to be suspended while the court is deliberating the case, but the court rejected that. As the court works slowly, a verdict is not expected soon, but probably within a year. Which means the verdict will only come when the current curfews are lifted already anyway, so what is exactly the point? Riza T"urmen, former ECHR judge and former MP for the biggest opposition party CHP, now teaching human rights law at Bilkent University in Ankara, tells Beaconreader: 'The court will determine that there was a human rights violation going on, and it's important to establish that. Several human rights are violated during the curfew, most importantly the right to life, the right not to be exposed to ill treatment, and deprivation of liberty.' Ramazan Demir is one of the lawyers who assisted at the ECHR. He tells Beaconreader: 'The court will never order a country to end the curfews, but they can order it to take measures against human rights violations during the curfews. Until the verdict is known, we will apply at the court in urgent individual cases.' The first request of the lawyers was granted by the court on 18 January: the authorities have to enable an ambulance to get the wounded H"useyin Paksoy from the streets in Cizre, where he had been waiting for medical help for four days. Paksoy was to be admitted to hospital, but it was too late: he died. Ramazan Demir: 'Meanwhile there are other wounded people that need medical care. I am constantly on the phone with Faysal (Sariyildiz, HDP MP in Cizre), who is trying hard to get wounded people off the streets and to hospitals.' 6. Why does the Kurdish movement declare self-rule? That's against the constitution, right? Yes, it is against the constitution (which is problematic, so Turkey has legal authority to take action). So yes, there is legal ground to prosecute mayors who declare autonomy in their municipalities. However, the Kurdish movement, in all the years that it has been struggling for Kurdish rights, has often broken the law because they don't consider Turkey's laws legitimate or in accordance with internationally recognized human rights. They said: 'We are Kurds' back in the days when that was considered a crime. They started Kurdish language classes before this was legally allowed. They spoke Kurdish at political rallies when that was still a reason to be prosecuted (which it was until the fall of 2013). They have opened schools in which Kurdish is the language of instruction although there is still) no legal ground for it. Declaring autonomy can be seen within this scope (and the state will react, which is a suboptimal solution): the Kurds don't wait until rights are granted to them, they take them, and eventually the state will catch up and legalize an already existing situation (that's naive actually). Those declaring self rule and supporting it are now pressured by the government. Mayors are detained and arrested, and the AKP threatens to lift the parliamentary immunity of HDP MP's who have spoken in favour of self rule. These are calculated risks by the Kurdish political movement. They know that they won't get their rights easily and are willing to make personal sacrifices (a la MLK would be better than the armed resistance). 7. Why is the government doing what it's doing? Good question. There was some hope that the violence would decrease after the snap elections of 1 November, in which the AKP regained the majority in parliament which it lost in the general elections of 7 June. But in fact the violence has only intensified. There may be two reasons for this. First is the desire of President Erdogan to change the constitution to replace the parliamentary system with a presidential one, with himself holding the reigns of power. The AKP however doesn't have enough seats in parliament to change the constitution and take it to a referendum: it needs 330 votes in parliament for that (3/5th of the 550 seats), and has 317, so thirteen short. So it needs the support of thirteen opposition MP's, and with the current violence, they might be able to win that many over from the ultra-nationalist MHP. After all, the violence between the elections drew many voters from the MHP to the AKP, and one leading MHP MP already made the switch to AKP before 1 November. With the violence, Erdogan would hit two birds with one stone. He may be able to win over enough MHP MP's. But more chaos in the country might also help to convince Turkish citizens of the need for a strong president with executive powers - for now, far from a majority of Turks seem convinced Turkey needs a presidential system. Second, the situation in Syria is important, and probably the main reason why this is happening. In early July 2015, Turkey stepped up its fight against ISIS by opening the Incirlik and Diyarbakir air bases to American F16's that wanted to bomb ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Before that, Turkey had already increased the arrests of suspected ISIS members inside Turkey, also raiding houses and confiscating weapons and battle fatigues. It seemed the Turks made a deal with the US, and maybe also with the PYD, the governing entity in the Kurdish kantons in Syria: the Kurds in Syria would not advance further westwards along the Turkish border. Turkey is scared to death that the Syrian Kurds, affiliated with the PKK, will take control of all the land bordering Turkey. From Turkey's perspective, that is a bigger threat than having ISIS on the border, since they perceive ISIS a merely a beatable security threat and the PKK a danger to its national unity. For months, the PYD and its armed forces the YPG indeed did not move further west and the American air force didn't bomb the area around Jarablus, the closest city west of PYD/YPG territory, to support the YPG militarily, as it had done earlier for a short period of time. Turkey's 'red line' was the Euphrates river, which marked the western border of PYD/YPG territory. The Kurds didn't cross it- until 26 December, when the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of different militias of which the YPG is a part, took control of the Tishrin (October) Dam. Turkey hasn't been able to enforce its 'red line', and has no means to do so. The only way to weaken the YPG, according to Turkey's assessment, is to weaken its bigger brother, the PKK, by starting an all out war against it and its young affiliates in the cities. This goal may be clear, but it remains uncertain whether Turkey has an actual strategy to win this battle against the PKK and YPS. They haven't been able to beat the resistance in the cities, and although they claim they have killed hundreds of PKK members, these figures are impossible to check. The organisation hasn't lost its power to strike, as became clear in a PKK attack on a police station in Cinar, Diyarbakir province, on 14 January, in which a disputed number of police officers (the state says one, the PKK claims more than thirty) and five civilians among whom two children died (more on that later). Turkey is dispatching ever more special teams and military equipment to the region, which is for sure not a sign the operations are going smoothly (Turkey has the means to become more brutal and suppress the PKK which hurts the people. There has to be another way). The war is carried out against the people of Kurdistan as well, and against the larger Kurdish political movement. Not only many civilians get killed, but also thousands of people are fleeing their homes, leaving the curfew areas holding white flags and a few of their belongings, and settle for the time being with family or in villages where they may have a small summer house. It remains unclear if this cleansing of the curfew cities is a strategy of the state, or the result of a lack of strategy - maybe the operations are taking longer than they expected. Whole neighbourhoods and towns are shot to rubble by tanks, mortars and from helicopters. A chilling reminder of the 1990s, when the army destroyed 2000 to 3000 villages in the southeast and sent hundreds of thousands on the run. The Turkish state is determined to break the Kurdish will to get the greater autonomy they are entitled to. This seems closely entangled with the hunt which the AKP started for representatives of the Kurdish political movement, more specifically the HDP, in parliament with 59 seats. What if the immunity of some HDP MP's is lifted? What if, to be more specific, the immunity of 28 HDP MP's is lifted? That would mean 5% of parliamentary seats are not occupied, which means new elections must be held. Could this be what the AKP, read Erdogan, is after? The rumours of Erdogan aiming at new elections have at least started, and this is one way they could be enforced. All the AKP needs to do in possible new elections is get the HDP under the 10% threshold. If they manage that, the votes of the districts where the HDP won will go to the second biggest party in that district, which is the AKP in the Kurdish regions. This could get the AKP to a super majority of 400 seats, especially when violence is ongoing and the people can be convinced of the need for a strong one-party government - correction: a presidential system with a president holding executive powers. The constitution can be changed without referendum if 400 MP's vote in favour of the constitutional change (there's the dictator.) The current move of many civilians from their towns will help the AKP, is it helped the party in the 1 November elections: independent analysis showed that the HDP lost votes because many Kurds had left their towns due to curfews and violence and were thus not able to cast their votes where they were officially registered. With tens of thousands of people on the run already, and maybe an intensifying of curfews in areas where there is too much snow once it turns spring, this could have a significant effect on any election outcome. The HDP got 10.7% in the 1 November elections and is dangerously close to the 10% threshold. They could return to the previous strategy of running with independents to get around the threshold, but that's not very likely. Far-fetched speculations? Maybe, but this is Turkey. Let's keep a close eye on developments. 8. Why did the PKK kill civilians in the attack in Cinar? The PKK itself said the civilians were not the target. They set a car bomb to explode in front of the police station in Cinar, Diyarbakir province, one of the stations from where the operations by the security forces are being coordinated. According to the Turkish authorities, 6 people died, among whom one police officer, three adult civilians and two children. According to the PKK, more than thirty police officers died and five civilians, including two children. Who is right? It is impossible to determine that. The civilians were family members of police officers. It is common for families of police officers to stay in state compounds for the duration of the policeman's posting in the southeast, usually for a couple of years before they are transferred elsewhere. The police station had several floors, the upper ones in residential use. The question why civilians are housed in the same building as the police station is not among the questions that can be asked in Turkey. The PKK apologized for the civilian deaths and offered condolences to the families. This caused a lot of anger: first kill, then say sorry? A PKK spokes person told Beaconreader: 'Killing civilians is a mistake. We should care especially about the children, we should not kill civilians.' The attack fits the strategy of the PKK as explained to Beaconreader by PKK co-leader Cemil Bayik: the PKK attacks the security forces outside the cities to try to weaken the police and army, so they can operate less effectively in the towns and cities. 9. Why is Europe silent? And the European press? Europe made a deal with Turkey about refugees. Given developments in Europe and the European underbelly, Europe is focused on doing anything to stop refugees from coming to Europe. Not that that's possible, but at least for their increasingly complaining citizens, they have to keep up appearances. In exchange for Turkey's bound-to-fail efforts to stop refugees, the EU pledged to revitalize the EU accession process with Turkey. Turkey knows the EU won't back out of the deal easily and can go ahead violating human rights and crush the Kurdish movement unhindered by the EU. The EU manouevred itself into this cynical situation, knowlingly and thus willingly. It's nothing new though, that lives of Kurds are low on their priority list. Or lives of refugees, for that matter. The EU and the US also need Turkey in their fight against ISIS. Turkey uses this to get implicit approval of its fight against Kurds. The EU is giving this approval basically explicitly, by acknowledging Turkey's right to fight terrorism. There's not much else they can do, since the PKK is on their list of terrorist organisations too. By the way, don't think that list is some sort of scientifically approved objective list of terrorist organisations; the list is a political tool to forge friendships between states (and to cut streams of money to the organisations on the list, among other things). It would help if the PKK was no longer on the terrorism list of the EU, but it is for now impossible to take it off, it would damage the relations between Turkey and the EU too much. Actually, Turkey is pressuring the EU to add more Kurdish organisations to the EU terrorism list, like umbrella organisation KCK (and the PYD). It is, however, not true that nobody in Europe cares about what happens to the Kurds. Your Beaconreader correspondent has received calls and also met with several politicians and policy makers in the EU who want to inform themselves better and wonder what can be done about the current human rights violations. These contacts are confidential so I can't reveal whom I talked to, but be sure these are not Greens and Leftist parties which are already long-term friends of the Kurds. And the European press? There are jewels, and you will see and read them if you keep a close watch. But unfortunately there are too many big media who rely too much on information from the Turkish authorities and are not willing or able to report from the ground. The jewels prove that it is still possible to go to the southeast, and although the curfew areas are not accessible for the press, there are enough stories out there which can be written. Media which don't do so forsake their journalistic task and should get their asses over there as soon as possible. http://ift.tt/1Uariy3 It is unfortunate the resolution process failed. There has been analysis of that and suggestions for restarting. Could the UN play the role of observer?
